The first amendment of the United States Constitution states, “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances” (U.S. Constitution). In my opinion, the idea of censoring songs or music videos is a violation of the Freedom of speech to the artists and performers who are just trying to speak their mind. Censorship is the suppression of ideas, information, and expression those individuals, groups or the government find objectionable or dangerous. Arguably one of the most important ideas of this law is the concept of Freedom of speech. Freedom of speech is the ability to communicate beliefs or thoughts or values without fear of government intervention or censorship. In today’s society, artists and musicians produce music, sometimes controversial, with the intent to explain a story and make millions of dollars. Kanye is known for using inappropriate language in his lyrics. Swear words in rap music are so important and powerful to use in order to tell a story or share beliefs because it adds so much to the passion and intensity that the musician is trying to express to the audience. In one of his albums, My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, the cover picture appears to be Kanye West having sexual intercourse with a phoenix. Due to this controversy, there is another album cover that was released to the public that is more appropriate for all audiences.
