If you were to ask someone how music has changed their lives, most people would say they listen to music all the time. People listen to music at the gym, shopping, in the car almost everywhere. A lot will say that music is relatable, it’s a way of art, music has saved people’s lives. However, if you were to ask people about rap music specifically, they would probably say it’s violent, gory, or say they don’t like it. Did you know that since rap music became popular violent crimes have declined? The rap movement has a positive change on society because it exposes the hardships of discrimination, rappers have been known to give back to their communities, and most rappers send a positive message to the youth.

An example is Chance The Rapper donating millions to Chicago’s public schools (Best). This money was used to support after school programs and The Arts. The governor of Chicago and Chance The Rapper, met to talk about money management. Even Michelle Obama tweeted Chance The Rapper saying “Thanks @chancetherapper for giving back to the Chicago community, which gave us so much. You are an example of the power of arts education” (Best). This goes to show how much his donation is changing kids lives.
Rap artists have a positive impact on youth because they help out communities. Akon provided 600 million Africans with electricity (Williams). He’s taught African engineers how to maintain and install solar powered electricity systems. He’s currently provided electricity in over 20 countries. Akon says his goal is to “make the deadline to be in 48 countries by the year 2020 and really achieve that goal…” (Williams). Mental health resources aren’t really available in lower income communities meaning if anyone needs help they’re less likely to get it (Brown). Logic’s song name is the number of the Suicide Prevention Line. Following the release of Logic’s song “1-800-273-8255” calls to the suicide hotline center increased as high as 50%. Adam Leventhal, director of USCIS Health, Emotion and Addiction Laboratory says “Anyway, to remove the stigma helps, and that can include popular culture and artists who resonate across their communities. That song could be a game changer” (Brown). After Logic’s song gained fame, calls to the suicide prevention center increased. This goes to show that people want to get help, and how much rap artists can influence them.
Rap artists positively guide the youth because they send a positive message. Rap artist Lil Xan, is promoting kids to get off xanax and stop abusing it (Konow). Lil Xan has opened up about abusing times, he quit after ending up in his hospital. He says his goal is to spread his message until it’s in your face and you can’t ignore it.
