As Sun Yat-Sen once said, “The key to success is action, and the essential to action is perseverance.” Perseverance is a stepping stone to success, it’s what guides you. Success can develop from all different actions but in the end it dwindles down to one trait; Passion. Passion is the fire that leads your dedication, effort, perseverance, and courage. Its truly the foundation for success. For anyone to reach success, they need to love whatever they’re attempting to achieve and desire to do well purely based on how much they enjoy it.

In school we read a chapter from the book “Outliers” called “Marita’s Bargain”. For Marita, success was something possible but only with great deals of dedication and sacrificing. Marita knew that she came from less than her peers and that she would have to work harder than the rest. She also knew that if she went to the right school, gave up some freedom, and applied herself, that she could change her path and pave a new life for herself. By going to KIPP Academy Marita was doing the most she could with such little she was given and turning a negative situation into a positive one. Sure she gave up her free time, her friends outside of KIPP, and she had to work harder with longer hours than people outside of her school, but she knew by doing the extra work then it would pay off in the long run. “I will work harder” (Sinclair 22), a quote spoken by Lithuanian Immigrant Jurgis Rudkus. Jurgis is a fictional character in the book “The Jungle” by Upton Sinclair. Whenever things get hard, he says these words and gives himself and his family hope. James Braddock is an American boxer who was most definitely making enough money to live, however with the great depression his life soon got turned upside down. James is a nonfiction character who was portrayed by Russel Crowe in the movie “Cinderella Man” which was directed by Ron Howard. A quote from James is “I have to believe that when things are bad I can change them.” When his family were threatened with starvation and losing their home, he did anything he could to lead them to a better life.
Many people encounter perseverance throughout their life in certain events. Buck from the Call of the Wild, is taken from a place like home to him and thrown into a harsh environment he is not used to. Similar to that, my mom was living a normal life when suddenly she had to stay strong for the family due to her brother near death from a tragic wreck. Even though they differ, both had to adapt to the life changing experiences and stay mentally strong.
What is the source of your success? My own definition of success is about overcoming my obstacles and hardships. If I can’t overcome the obstacles and hardships along the way, then I will try again so that I am more prepared and have the right knowledge. I want to meet obstacles and hardships because I want to feel the pleasure of success when I overcome them. In order for me to overcome and embrace hardships, I need to find the missing link, have the right knowledge, and practice effective time management.
Students come across many complications during their school career. Some students are actually smart but just don’t apply themselves, or even have hardships that are going on in their lives. These can be fixed if you can find motivation and confidence. In the story “Zero,” Paul Logan coasts through high school and college. Logan doesn’t know the tools to succeed in school, which causes his grades to fall. In the story “The Jacket,” Gary Soto explains how the way you dress influences how you feel about yourself. Which in this case him getting an ugly jacket; which causes him to be depressed and his grades to fall. Albeit Logan and Soto went through similar hardships, they both succeed with motivation and confidence.

My determination led to me my graduating as valedictorian of my class, while balancing three varsity sports and several extracurricular activities.
