(STEWE-2)Jonas also tried with lily. Jonas went up to her and was trying to tell her about how elephants were actually a real thing. “Did you know that once there really were elephants?” (101). Lily has a comfort toy of an elephant. Jonas touched her shoulder and tried to give her the memory. It did not work, All he did was make Lily frustrated. (SIP-B) As the more memories Jonas received the harder is was to accept his society. (STEWE-1)Jonas received the memory of Christmas. “Who were all those old people” (123). Jonas was so shocked that all of those people where in that room. Jonas never knew what love was. (STEWE-2) Jonas has just received the memory of war. “Jonas did not want to go back” (121). He did not want the honor, he did not want the wisdom, and he also did not want the pain. Jonas was so scared by the memory he wanted to stop receiving these memories. (STEWE-1) Jonas was talking to the giver about the release on the twins. “Well, maybe it's too late for this one. I'm sure it was this morning” (147). Jonas thought it was too late to see the release of the baby twins, because it was in the morning. But the Giver told him it was recorded. They both watched it. Jonas saw the hole video and was shocked about what happened in the video. He saw his father weight the baby (like he told him), but they he saw his father kill the baby. “He killed it!, my father killed it!” (150). Jonas was broken that he saw his father killed that innocent baby. (STEWE-2) Jonas realized that Fiona is training to release people. “And what about Fiona? She loves the old!” (153). Fiona is releasing the old. “She’s is very efficient at her work, your red-haired friend” (153). That crushed him. He could not handle that Fiona is killing the old. (SIP-B) Jonas makes a plan with the Giver but he breaks it because he need someone to connect with. (STEWE-1) After Jonas saw the video of his father killing the baby, it drove him over the edge. He wanted to leave the society. Jonas told he would try to leave.

Jonas's father did not understand the value of life really was. The Community makes sure that their residents do not know the true meaning of release. Just because they ignore the fact that several murders happen frequently, does not mean that the reality behind it disappears with it. Ignoring this, does not make the residents of the Community live a blissful life. In the beginning of the novel, when the Jonas talks about what release means, he says, “… to be released… a terrible punishment, an overwhelming statement of failure,”(Lowry 20).
At this point, Jonas has realized what release really means. He finds out that the little baby Gabe that has lived with his family is being released at the very next morning. And the large plan that has been made with The Giver, to get rid of sameness within his community can’t be carried out because he knows that he must save Gabe’s life. He starts to really understand what it means to truly live and truly love. He knows he loves Gabe and, therefore he must sacrifice himself in order that Gabe might live. Jonas decides to leave and change the lives of his people so that they can experience the truth. “The Giver rubbed Jonas’s hunched shoulders… We’ll make a plan” (155). Their plan involves leaving sameness and heading to Elsewhere, where Jonas knows the memories can be released to the people. He has a connection with Gabe, a special child who has experienced the memories, unlike the rest of the community. Jonas has a strong love for Gabe, and he longs to give him a better life. “We’re almost there, Gabriel” (178). Even with a sprained ankle, Jonas keeps pushing forward because he wants everyone to experience what The Giver has given him. He wants them to have a life where the truth is exposed. When he turns twelve, his job for the rest of his life is decided as the Receiver. His job is to receive all the memories the previous Receiver has held on to. While this is beneficial for Jonas as he is able to leave the society and his job of the Receiver behind and gets freedom, the community is left without someone to take the memories from The Giver. This is an example of conformity because a few of the Receivers before Jonas had left the community due to the things they were learning and finding out about the community, which changed the way they viewed the society. They then realized that they do not want to do this for the rest of their life, and for their job to sit around and hold memories as no one else is capable of knowing them is not something they want to do. On the surface, Jonas is like any other eleven-year-old boy living in his community. He seems more intelligent and perceptive than many of his peers, and he thinks more seriously than they do about life, worrying about his own future as well as his friend Asher’s. He enjoys learning and experiencing new things: he chooses to volunteer at a variety of different centers rather than focusing on one, because he enjoys the freedom of choice that volunteer hours provide. He also enjoys learning about and connecting with other people, and he craves more warmth and human contact than his society permits or encourages. The things that really set him apart from his peers—his unusual eyes, his ability to see things change in a way that he cannot explain—trouble him, but he does not let them bother him too much, since the community’s emphasis on politeness makes it easy for Jonas to conceal or ignore these little differences. Like any child in the community, Jonas is uncomfortable with the attention he receives when he is singled out as the new Receiver, preferring to blend in with his friends.
Jonas is the protagonist in The Giver. He changes from being a typical twelve-year-old boy to being a boy with the knowledge and wisdom of generations past. He has emotions that he has no idea how to handle. At first he wants to share his changes with his family by transmitting memories to them, but he soon realizes this will not work. After he feels pain and love, Jonas decides that the whole community needs to understand these memories. Therefore Jonas leaves the community and his memories behind for them to deal with. He hopes to change the society so that they may feel love and happiness, and also see color. Jonas knows that memories are hard to deal with but without memories there is no pain and with no pain, there is no true happiness.
Love and other deep emotions are not worth giving up for safety. Jonas’ own mother doesn’t love him, she doesn’t know what love means. “Do you love me… So meaningless that it has become almost obsolete” (pg127). Jonas refused to live where your parents don’t know what the meaning of love is. So he left. He took a stand. Jonas found out that his father was going to kill his stepbrother, Gabe and he was furious. His father doesn’t even know what the word kill means. His father honestly thought he was helping Gabe by releasing him, just because he didn’t sleep soundly through the night. If he knew the emotions of love, empathy and hope he might have known that release is a bad thing. But they chose to not have feelings because they were afraid of heartbreaks,
It had knocked on the door, Jonas checked out who it was. It was Fiona, “Oh my gosh, Jonas, you’re alive!” exclaimed Fiona. “What happened to Gabe, is he ok, why are you crying.”
Jonas misses the way it was before he had memories where there was no pain or feeling, because everything was innocent. But he understands that although there was innocence nobody feels true happiness.Jonas thinks: “But he knew he couldn’t go back to that world of no feelings that he had lived in so long” (Lowry 131). Jonas wishes he could go back when everything was innocent and when he had no burden of pain, but although there was innocence the bad memories were stripped away to avoid the feeling of pain but also leaves everyone emotionless. But he knows it can never be the same again because of all the knowledge he gained from memories. He learns that memoires need to be valued, even the painful ones. Jonas feels that his community can change and things could be different. He thinks they should live in a world with memories. Jonas says: “Things could be different. I don’t know how, but there must be some way for things to be different. There could be colours [...] and everybody would have memories [...] There could be love” (Lowry 128). Jonas wishes that they could all have memories because everyone would be able to experience love. Love is one of the most important things in human life. In The Giver the men and women are not allowed to have children and in our society men and women have babies every day. The movie starts when Jonas and his best friends, Asher and Fiona, are graduating from childhood and are founding what part they will take in the community. Jonas feels lost because he feels that he is different. He saw things differently, but he never said anything, because he was never wanting to be different in this perfect world. He felt scared that he does not belong in his community.
