“Is Bullying an Issue Among Teens?”
Many people think bullying isn’t a huge issue among teens, they think teasing, calling others names, making fun of others, blackmailing, etc, are jokes. Verbal, physical, and cyber bullying are all different types of bullying. All of these types of bullying have caused many teens to commit suicide all over the world because they don’t know how to cope with the situation.
Two of the most common types of bullying are verbal and physical. Verbal bullying is known as name calling and insulting others for the way they look,etc. In the book, “The Outsiders” by S.E. Hinton, there are a variety of examples that show these types of bullying. One example in this book that shows verbal bullying is when the socs(higher social class) were calling the lower class “greasers” because of their social class. Another example found in this book would be when the socs make fun of how much grease the “greasers” put in their hair and when the socs threaten Ponyboy and his friends to leave their girlfriends alone.

There are also examples of physical bullying in the novel, “The Outsider” by S.E. Hinton. In the beginning of the book it tells the reader that Johnny was jumped by the socs just because they didn’t like the “greasers”. Later in the book the socs try to drown Ponyboy. The movie, The Outsiders, starts with the Curtis parents on their weekly, Saturday evening drive to the baking store to buy some ingredients for their boys’ favorite Sunday morning, breakfast treat: chocolate cake. The Curtis boys love their chocolate cake for Sunday breakfast not only because they love it, but also because they appreciate how hard their parents have to work to save the monies necessary for the morsels that put smiles on their faces!
The book the Outsiders by SE Hinton starts out with the main character (narrator), Ponyboy, walking home from the movies. While on his way he is stopped and attacked by way a small gang of Socs, the rich kids from the West side of town. Lucky for him his friends, a small gang of Greasers (kids the from the poorer East side of the town) that he belongs to are nearby to help him out. While they are to make the Socs run off before they can too badly hurt Ponyboy.
The novel The Outsiders by SE Hinton is about growing up in a society divided by social class, and dealing with the troubles that come with it. An important theme in the novel that I will be talking about is social class and how it affects the people categorized in them. A character that shows us the theme of social class is Ponyboy.
Ponyboy can count on his brothers and friends to have his back when it comes to the socs jumping the greasers. The socs (short for socials) is a group of elites who live on the “rich” side of town while the greasers are known for always causing trouble. Ponyboy lives with his two brothers after his parents are killed in a car crash. When Ponyboy has a late night encounter with a group of drunk socs, someone takes it too far. What will he do now?
The Outsiders identified the 60’s, often there would be violence between groups and often involving a group’s social class. For instance, the tensions between the Socs and Greasers is violent, and this will lead to Bob’s death, Johnny’s death, as well as many injuries throughout both gangs. The book The Outsiders is written by S.E. Hinton and is portrayed through the eyes of a high school student in Tulsa, OK where S.E. Hinton grew up. Hinton began writing The Outsiders in 1965 at the age of 17 and the book was finally published in 1967 when she was 19. Book Report On The Outsiders Character Analysis: Ponyboy Curtis - Ponyboy is a fourteen-year-old member of a gang called the Greasers. His parents died in a car accident, so he lives alone with his two older brothers, Darry and Soda. He is a good student and athlete, but most people at school consider him a vagrant like his Greaser friends. Sodapop Curtis - Soda is Pony's handsome, charming older brother. He dropped out of school to work at a gas station, and does not share his brothers' interest in studying and sports.
I have recently read "The Outsider" by S. E. Hinton. The Outsiders has a lot of themes incorporated into the story. One of the main themes is actually reflected in the title. This theme is present throughout the whole story. Ponyboy and his brothers lack the "normal" comfort of having a real family, they are outside of the socio-economic level of everyone else, and the battle of the two gangs present in the story, the Greasers and their rival gang: the Socs.
The Outsiders is about the life of a 14-year-old boy. The book tells the story of Ponyboy “Curtis” and his struggles with right and wrong in a society in which he believes that he is an outsider. Ponyboy and his two brothers, Darrel (Darry), who is 20, and Sodapop, who is 16, have recently lost their parents in an automobile accident. Pony and Soda are allowed to stay under Darry's guardianship as long as they all behave themselves. The boys are greasers, a class term that refers to the young men on the East Side, the poor side of town. The greasers' rivals are the Socs, short for Socials, who are the "West-side rich kids."
Bullying by definition is a form of aggressive behavior in which someone intentionally and repeatedly causes another person injury or discomfort. Bullying can take the form of physical contact, words or more subtle actions. [Why] Bullying has grown new outlets over the last decade. With social media outlets and text messaging added to the game, bullying is not just about getting tormented face to face anymore. Cyber bullying can include sending out mean or threatening emails and instant messages about a person, spreading rumors about someone and also include photos that a person would consider to be humiliating. [Chamberlin] Bullying can have many outlets. The most common form of bullying is still face to face confrontation. But the other outlets, such as cyber bullying are definitely not something to take lightly or consider low on a scale of importance. Sexual harassment, racial differences, not being “cool enough”, or just simply being viewed as a weaker individual may attribute to many of the reasons a person is preyed on.

Bullying includes actions that can be physical, mental, or emotional and result in one person having power over another (Jenson, Jeffery M.,et al).There is also Cyber bullying which is using technology to degrade and belittle the victim (“Teenager Bullying”). Physical bullying is the most easily identified form of bullying. It is when the bully tries to bodily control the victim by hitting or striking (“Teenage Bullying”). Emotional bullying is when the bully is trying to get the victim to feel lonely or secluded from others (“Teenage Bullying”). Emotional bullying is often a method that girls use instead of boys (“Teenage Bullying”).
Knowing the types of ways an individual can be bullied is important. The common type of bullying is among children in school, which in most cases, happens physically: whereby the child is beaten, which Mary and her brother Ralph experienced while growing up. For example, Mary’s brother on several occasions went home from school with bruises which he got from being hit by his classmates. Physical bullying occurs when a student is trying to gain power over peers and to get such power, him or her results to hitting, which in return is detrimental to the victim. Physical bullying is the easiest type of bullying to be identified, thereby, making it a little bit easier to stop or control.
There are four different types of bullying. These are physical, verbal, indirect, and cyber bullying. Physical bullying includes any type of physical contact towards another person that is unwanted, such as hitting, kicking, pinching, punching, even spitting. Breaking others possessions or simply taking their belongings are also examples of physical bullying. When the parents physically abuse children, they often feel as if it is their fault they are being knocked around. If the child has no one to talk to, or no one to tell, the physical abuse can go on for years and cause multiple problems for the child, even in their adult years.
Too many adults seem to think that bullying is just part of being a kid, but it isn’t, and it has a negative and sometimes long lasting effect on others. Bullying Statistics show that “Suicide is the third leading cause of death among young people, resulting in about 4,400 deaths per year, according to the CDC. For every suicide among young people, there are at least 100 suicide attempts. Over 14 percent of high school students have considered suicide, and almost 7 percent have attempted it.” What some people do not realize is that there are many different types of bullying that include physical bullying, emotional bullying, sexting, and cyberbullying. There are many warning signs of suicide. Depression, interest in death or dying, engaging in harmful activities (e.g. substance abuse, reckless behavior, and self-injury), giving away personal possessions, saying goodbye to people, and making comments about how life would be better off without them.
