The book the Outsiders by SE Hinton starts out with the main character (narrator), Ponyboy, walking home from the movies. While on his way he is stopped and attacked by way a small gang of Socs, the rich kids from the West side of town. Lucky for him his friends, a small gang of Greasers (kids the from the poorer East side of the town) that he belongs to are nearby to help him out. While they are to make the Socs run off before they can too badly hurt Ponyboy. The day after his run-in with the Socs, Ponyboy along with two of his pals Johnny and Dally visit the drive in movies. While they are there they meet two Soc girls, Cherry and Marcia. After the end of the movie, Johnny and Ponyboy start to walk the girls back to their homes when another group of Socs lead by the girl's boyfriends, Bob and Randy, show up. Ponyboy and his older brother/guardian, Darry, get into a fight. As they argue thing get heated and without thinking and out of anger, Darry slaps Ponyboy. Ponyboy run from the house and finds his best friend, Johnny. They walk to a nearby park let Ponyboy calm down before they returning home. However before they are able to start homeward the same gang of Socs from earlier show up drunk and angry at the two Greaser boys. Bob makes threats at Johnny (whom he had badly attacked and beat up in the past) while at the same time as the other Soc boys start to drown Ponyboy in the park fountain. In self-defense and inorder to save his friend, Johnny uses of his pocket knife to stab Bob in the stomach, killing him. The rest of Socs run away and Johnny and Ponyboy quickly go to find and tell Dally (another one in every of their gang and close friend) about what had just happened. Dally gives them fifty dollars in cash and tells them to get away from the town and go to an old church inside the country. There they are able to hideout until they know they aren’t going to be
