Outsiders in Today’s Context The Outsiders was novel written by SE Hinton, 45 years ago. It is based on an group of social outcasts, known as greasers, who lived in Tulsa, Oklahoma. It was made to enrich young adults about the reason social groups can lead to conflicts. A outsider is an person that does not fit in any social groups. Today’s outsiders share the common characteristics of alienation and anxiety.
Alienation is the state or experience of being isolated from a group.Bullies are today’s most common type of outsiders, and they too are alienated Bullies are usually traumatized during their past, and they tend to take it on their peers. Anxiety is the state of being in constant fear. Many people fear unfamiliar things and some people. In today’s world, illegal immigrants face constant fear. Illegal Immigrants are usually afraid to blend in with kids. They usually are harassed, and not treated as equals. In the illegal immigrants article it states ‘’Cruz said he is also concerned that some of the children may be living in overcrowded homes. Others may be forced to support their families, he said. In addition, some of the children are facing problems in school because they don't know English, and don't eat well.’’ This demonstrates a feeling of being disconnected because they are not considered as a citizen. Children are facing abuse in school because they do not know culture and the language. They are set aside, and most of them usually drop out. Many of them work at lower-end jobs to support their families back at home. In fact, many kids go to the wrong path due to this fear. Many kids get addicted easily to some relief source. In the article, “ An young homeless man taught me the trigonometry of alienation,” Science Boy says, “ A lot of kids take drugs to calm their fears and worries.” This demonstrates a feeling of being disconnected because they turn to drugs for their leisure.
