Music therapy Is the alternative and complementary treatment by music which is provided by health care professionals to persons of all ages who require special services because of behavioral, social or physical disabilities to promote healing and enhance quality of life for the patients(1) Music therapy may be used: to encourage emotional expression , promote social interaction.(1) relieve stress and provide an over all sense of well- being May be used in some medical hospitals , cancer centers , schools ,drug recovery programs and psychiatry hospitals.(2) history of music therapy In the thirteenth century, Arab hospitals contained music-rooms for the benefit of the patients.[3] In the United States, Native American medicine men often employed chants and dances as a method of healing patients.[4] TheTurco-Persian psychologist and music theorist al-Farabi (872–950), known as Alpharabius in Europe, dealt with music therapy in his treatise Meanings of the Intellect, in which he discussed the therapeutic effects of music on the soul.[5] Robert Burton wrote in the 17th century in his classic work, The Anatomy of Melancholy, that music and dance were critical in treating mental illness, especially melancholia.[6][7][8] Music therapy as we know it began in the aftermath of World Wars I and II, when, particularly in the United Kingdom, musicians would travel to hospitals and play music for soldiers suffering from war-related emotional and physical trauma.[9] Music therapists: Music therapist must have a bachelor's degree or higher in music therapy from one of American music therapy association's 72 approved colleges and universities including 1200 hours of clinical training. Music can provide stimulation for arranging a series of movement consciously like walking by choosing a special type of rhythm and feeling its beat. As if the rhythm work to help the people to discover and improve their own lost automatic rhythm. Music therapy can help improving the quality of life for people suffering form Parkinson's by: Promote an overall sense of well-being . Decrease the levels of stress , anxiety or pain. Improve movement. Promote self-expression and confident. Improve memory.(9) There are also cognitive benefits because when the individuals are responding to music , the brain works on and develops processes that have become difficult such as cutting food or dressing.as a result , it may be able to help in improving everyday activities .
