1. What is the title of the text and what is the text about? The title of the text is “The Numbers Game”. The story is about a prophecy describing the death of an evil sorcerer by an heir to the kingdom of Khandar. As the sorcerer lay defeated by an heir, a separate candidate heir steps in to claim the sorcerer as his own, and then several more candidate heirs do the same. During their bickering over who gets to kill the sorcerer, the sorcerer sneaks away. 2. What is the author’s view? How do I know? Based on the title “The Numbers Game” the author’s point of view is that if there are large enough numbers attempting to do a nearly impossible task, eventually one of those numbers will get through. 3. Is the evidence valid? How do I know? The evidence is valid because there are only two elements to the story: the bickering of the candidates, and the background description of the prophecy. Most of the story is the comical discourse happening among the characters, yet the only other part of the story that provides a different substance is when the author begins to speak about the prophecy. 5. Is the evidence relevant? How do I know? The evidence is relevant because the concept of producing vast quantities of numbers (units) in hopes of having at least one accomplish the goal corresponds to the title of the story “The Numbers Game”. The concept can be interpreted as a game which balances a critical mass of units necessary to accomplish a task. 6. Have I heard/read anything similar or dissimilar? What was it? Many similar items I’ve read/heard about happen in nature. I’ll provide one example: sea turtles. When sea turtles lay eggs they do so by the thousands and each turtle lays about 100 eggs multiple times throughout their lifetime. Because of predators, not all 100 eggs will get to hatch and continue their parent’s bloodline. In order to beat the odds for survival of the bloodline, each turtle lay many eggs. The sheer amount of eggs laid in a lifetime will almost assure that at least one egg will survive long enough to continue the
