One of the qualities required for any employee today is multitasking. In today’s society, it is rare to find people who do not multitask. Employers often promote inflated standards to their workers even if their job is getting the morning coffee or washing dishes. It is a popular belief that multitasking is very effective and allows one to complete more work in a shorter period compared to a worker who does not. However, multitasking is unproductive and damaging for people who try to perform more than one task at once.

Employees today are bombarded with so many tasks that they become inefficient. When given so many projects to finish, people are compelled to multitask because of their workload that keeps piling up. Companies should remind the managers to only give employees a manageable workload or only one project at a time. If they did this, they would find their employees to be more productive. Also, employees should be encouraged to take breaks away from their workspace. If they take their break say at their desk, then they will be more tempted to use the phone or send emails, when they should be relaxing. Managers should also provide their employees with the correct time management skills. When employees lack the skill of time managements, they often make up their lost time with multitasking, which leads in low quality work. As human beings, it is becoming more of a second nature to us to multi-task. As the world is technologically advancing more and more every day, there are becoming more distractions. Social-media is flourishing, reality TV show ratings are going up, and humans even unintentionally check their phones every two minutes. In this day of age, multi-tasking is proving to promote inefficiency rather than productivity.
In the article, “Multitasking Can Make You Lose…Um…Focus,” Alina Tugend centralizes around the negative effects of multitasking. She shows that often with multitasking, people tend to lose focus, lack work quality, have an increase in stress, and in the end she gives a solution to all these problems. Tugend conveys her points by using understandable language, a clear division of subjects, and many reliable sources, making her article cogent.
Multitasking requires that a worker divides his/her time and energy on multiple tasks at the same time. As a result, the care and attention to detail is divided. The amount of focus that could be used to review one assignment is split. In an experiment, Patterson (2017) discovered that students who studied while participating in media multitasking took longer to complete tasks in their classes. This experiment addresses media multitasking in the case of students. While it is not a type of multitasking we normally consider, it does involve performing multiple tasks at one. Instead of putting all of their focus on their assignments, these students’ attention is on the assignment and on their social media. The results of the experiment prove that it when placed in scenarios where people are required to focus on multiple things, it takes more time to complete certain tasks. In this instance, media multitasking caused a decrease in performance. In another experiment, Paridon and Kaufmann (2010) made an observation when studying multitasking in the workplace, stating that people’s reaction time diminished when multiple tasks were completed at once. The believe that multitasking affects people’s performance has also been proven to be true in the workplace, as the speed of people’s production when down when required to complete multiple tasks. Performance can be determined by the speed in which a task is completed.
The pressure can come from the need to make minimum wage money or a parent deciding on what their kids need to fulfill financially. When choosing something partaking interest in, they are content and adore what they do. Love for their work profession encourages a positive attitude and this is needed for productivity. When an employee loves what they do, they attain a constructive behavior. But, when productivity is sacrificed, it begins to suffer with negative employees who only work to make a piece of change. The only determination they pertain to is to increase their productivity in order to get more money, but in due time this makes them traumatic and hostile. As a “multi-tasker” I learned that I am not actually completing two tasks at once, I am losing focus on one of the assignments. However, I am able complete homework assignments and listen to music at the same time, but I sometimes lose my thought of mind. Other people think they can read and listen to music at the same time. Although, reading and music shouldn’t really be combined because music may intervene with the reading and distract you. As the article stated, some people thought they were the best at multi-tasking when in fact they are the worst.
