Cellular Devices Affecting College Students

Cellular devices are negatively impacting people throughout their day by distracting them from what is important. We all need to cut back the amount of time that we spend on these devices so we can use our time more efficiently on more valuable tasks. Moreover, college students use social media and play games during class, which significantly impacts them in the classroom. Cutting back your phone usage is very important if you want to accomplish more throughout your day but it will take hard work. The average person spends 135 minutes on social media per day, and according to the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (Writers np.), distractions are at an all-time high when college students are in the classroom. Valuable hours are lost by browsing through videos, pictures, posts, and web surfing while they should be used for a student’s educational purposes. Multitasking leads to distracted thinking can make it very difficult to obtain the grades that you desire. In 2006 UCLA conducted a study which showed that those who multitasked used a different part of their brain compared to their more focused peers (Writers np.). These multitaskers used the stratum which holds memories well, but only those used for building habits or patterns, and it’s good for learning physical duties or assembly work but not for academic success (Writers np.). The more focused counterparts use the hippocampus, which is for better learning in the brain (Reed np.). Those who multitask actually train their brains to shorten their attention spans, leading them to a low level of thinking in high-level situations (Reed np.).
