The Face of Tomorrow One of many problems facing society today is the rate of youth dropping out of high school. According to the National Center for Education Statistics, “Dropping out of high school is related to a number of negative outcomes” (Patrick et al. 1). Unfortunately, this a reality for many people in our society. This is why the issue must be addressed and it must be addressed complexly because it is not a cut and dry problem. It may seem like there are too many factors in play, but this should be seen as an opportunity for many solutions. There may not be one course of action that will necessarily remedy all of the factors at play, but each causing factor may create a remedy from itself. A lack of high school education creates disadvantages. Sometimes, it turns out, the reason for dropping out initially was because of similar disadvantages. These disadvantages could be anything from a lack of income at home to abuse in the household. It can be a seemingly endless loop. Other times, students simply become disengaged and feel no need to complete their education. On the other hand, students may often feel that skipping ahead and going directly into the workforce is the right choice for them. Regardless of the reason, dropping out of high school is a problem that can be solved with time and effort. Often times students end up leaving high school before graduating because of problems at home. One way to prevent the students in this situation from dropping out would be to dedicate more focus to students in need at home. Some students have household responsibilities that hinder them from completing their education. If the school system as a whole could create a program to assist these families in need, then these students would have a chance to complete their high school education. In an article about a high school dropout the author explains, “After that Davis returned home but stopped going to school altogether. ‘I was so behind,’ he says. ‘School just felt like a waste of time.’” (Amber). These students plan to go directly into the workforce and see no reason to not just jump ahead, or rather drop out and go straight to work. However, if their high school career could be job focused, perhaps they would feel a desire to stay. High schools could implement programs for students to graduate with real-world work skills. Skills which could get them a job directly out of high school. Another reason for students dropping out of high school is that they have simply become disengaged. Many high schools do not have the luxury of sufficient counseling staff. If students could feel more engaged and supported they would likely continue and complete their high school education. It becomes an issue of finances to hire and maintain a counseling staff, but this is an issue that should not be neglected because it will cost more money.
