The emergence of social media has transformed the world as social media sites continue to intensify in the 21st century. The popularity of these sites has come with unlawful and abusive behaviors. It is interesting and worth realizing that social media emerged as a way of making communication easier through simplifying interactions. However, the twist of events has caused harm and pain to users and non-users as well. There is a lack of clarity regarding what exactly social media sites are, but the incorporation of technology makes it elaborative (Goldman 416). The use of social media sites, such as Facebook, MySpace and Twitter has contributed to cyber bullying. The bullying and insults on social media sites have continued to escalate with most of these incidents going unnoticed.
The information posted in social media sites is under the sender’s control or the account holder. Although social media sites possess unique features of converting people from consumers to publishers of information, they could damage the reputation of a person (Washington 24). They create a connection with their targets by posing as people of goodwill. Once they are connected, they soothe them into revealing private information which is then turned into a bullying tool. As many children gain access to mobile phones and, thus, social media sites access, they become soft targets for such criminals. Bullying is a process and the perpetrators employ various means.
