Previously, in Literature class, My peers and I read an excerpt from a chapter titled "The Myth of Romantic Love" from the book titled The Road Less Traveled by Dr. Scott Peck. The author acknowledges that the myth of romantic love that we've all seen in movies as young children, is a lie. This doesn't mean that we will never find love, but it won't come as easily as we see it in movies. Unfortunately, this idea of romantic love can be found in movies as well as in music. In these stories, the ending is so romantic and so content that they even state, “and the prince and the princess lived happily ever after.” Unfortunately, in reality, these ‘happily ever after’ stories do not exist, in contrary, many end up in distress. Some more realistic and mature are the stories by Mary E. Wilkins Freeman: “A New England Nun,” and Edith Wharton: “Roman Fever.” These stories are written in a very romantic way that they may appear similar to those with happy endings but at the end reality hits in its very cruel nature way of life.

Deceiving and irrational, love can be a challenging emotion to endure. It can be difficult to find happiness in love, and on the journey to find that happiness, love can influence one’s thought process. Shakespeare uses specific wording in his play, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, to poke fun while exploring the individual’s quest for love. The desire to find love and a happy ending with a lover is so strong in the foundation of mankind, that people will not accept a life without it. In fact, they would rather give up their attribute of rationality than their opportunity to find a significant other. The heart’s control of the mind can make a foolish man.
There is no good and proper time to fall in love. In fact, most love stories derive from the most unlikely of circumstances. When two successful, career-driven individuals set out to advance their career at the unsuspecting expense of each other, the idea of falling in love couldn’t have been further from their minds. In the Paramount Studios 2003 film, “How To Lose A Guy In 10 Days”, what began as a selfish work project for a young successful man and woman, ultimately ended in the pair falling in love. Both parties are challenged to manipulate one another for their own personal gain. Throughout the film we see the interpersonal communication between the pair as they set out to achieve their goals over the course of a 10 day period. They are torn between victorious outcome of their challenge and keeping their selfish focus of their career advancement, and how they truly begin to feel about one another.
Shakespeare captured the idea that true love’s course never runs smooth extremely well in A Midsummer Night’s Dream, and several pieces of literature in modern times follow suit to that idea. Modern authors write stories about people who are in love and have to move away from each other, ultimately causing the course of true love to not run smooth. The popular novel, The Fault in Our Stars, also follows this idea since the two lovers are separated due to their cancer diagnosis. Outside of literature, things like divorce and laws against same sex marriage cause the course of true love to not run smooth. Both in Shakespeare’s times and in modern day, “the course of true love never did run smooth”(28) is an idea that proves itself again and again.
A first date, a tender touch, a gentle kiss, can all be described as expressions of affection. Innocence often has to do with the fondness and adoration displayed in relationships. The movie, Love Actually, starring Hugh Grant, focuses on different ways of making love work by showing the lives of different people. The film, from time to time, shows a little boy who is falling in love with a girl in his school. He thinks that the best way to win her heart is to become a rock star and so he joins his school band as a drummer. He practices the drum everyday until it’s time for the Christmas concert where he plays his best. At first, the girl does not notice him and he is heartbroken and to make matters worse, she’s leaving the country. He goes to the airport to find her, and, when he does, he kisses her and lets her know that he likes her. While the film does not tell the audience what happens in the future, it can be assumed that there will be a new love blossoming.
Many popular love songs claim that being in love is similar to being under a magical spell. Some state that "all you need is love," and still others affirm that "love lifts us up where we belong." People dream about finding their one and only soul mate, and in this day and age, the pursuit for love and happiness is closer to home than ever before......in fact, it's only a mouse-click away.
To begin with, romantic movies mold expectations of what love is really like. They portray that love is the only thing that matters. In the past, love was secondary. Relationships were arranged by parents because they wanted their children to join lands or kingdoms, and whether or not the couple actually loved each other was irrelevant. Today, parents have almost no say in who their children fall in love with. Romance movies over-emphasize love when it comes to “falling in love at first sight” and the idea that “true love conquers all”. Around the world people love. They live for love, they write for love, the sing, eat, cook, die and kill for love (ForumNetwork, 2009). Since the beginning of recorded time, people have wondered why love is such an intense and universal feeling. There is no culture in this planet that does not have love (ForumNetwork, 2009). This essay will only talk about romantic love were sexuality and attraction are involved. Romantic love, is one of the most powerful energies on earth (ForumNetwork, 2009), it is indeed one on the most addictive substances we can experience at least once in our life. The rush of cocaine and the rush of being in love depend on the same chemicals in our brain (ForumNetwork, 2009); we are literally addicted to love. The feeling of being in love does not depend whether the other part loves you back or not, it will help you feel more happy that is for sure, but the intensity of the feeling loved or heartbroken is the same, they both depart from the same principle: the love and desire of the other. Eben Harrell, a writer for Time Magazine, explains in the article entitled “Are Romantic Movies Bad For You?” that many couples being treated in therapy have problems as a result of the “misconceptions about love and romance depicted in Hollywood films” (Harrell 1). “Phillip Hodson, a fellow at the British Association for Counseling and Psychotherapy, says that while romantic comedies can cause problems for couples once they exit the euphoric first few years of a relationship, they also provide a much needed source of hope and inspiration for the unattached” (Harrell 1). While I do agree that romantic films can provide people with encouragement that there is somewhere in the world for them, I believe Hollywood’s portrayal of love is only acceptable to an extent. Poets and philosophers for centuries have been trying to answer the question, what is love? Love has an infinite number of definitions, which vary from one person to another. Love cannot be measured by any physical means. One may never know what true love is until love it- self has been experienced. What is love? A four letter word that causes a person to behave in a way that is out of character. What is love? A first kiss, childhood crushes on a teacher or friend’s mom. What is love? Poets and philosophers may never know what love really is, and we may never truly understand the question what is love.
