The Modern Woodman Speech Bee has been held at St. Joseph’s since 2006. This years’ school level speech bee was held on February 4th. Prior to that, there had been a classroom speech bee, where three finalists and one alternate were selected from each of the upper grades. If students are selected as finalists at the school level they move onto the district. The following levels are city and nation. Last year, George Cooke, now a Xavier freshman, won second place in the national speech bee. Ms. Bernero was certain that if such success had happened once, it could happen again. This year’s topic was Hunger in America. The speeches reflected the importance of taking a stand and fighting against the horror that leaves almost sixteen million children
