The Modern Woodman Speech Bee has been held at St. Joseph’s since 2006. This years’ school level speech bee was held on February 4th. Prior to that, there had been a classroom speech bee, where three finalists and one alternate were selected from each of the upper grades. If students are selected as finalists at the school level they move onto the district. The following levels are city and nation. Last year, George Cooke, now a Xavier freshman, won second place in the national speech bee. Ms. Bernero was certain that if such success had happened once, it could happen again. According to the “Hunger and Poverty Fact Sheet” on Feeding America’s website, in 2014 there were over 48 million Americans living in food insecure households, which included 15 million children. During the school year, these children rely on free or reduce breakfast and lunch. When the summer vacation months arrive, these children loose the security of these meals. Feeding America, working alongside the United States Department of Agriculture, provide free summer meals to these children. In Janet Poppendieck's “Want Amid Plenty: From Hunger To Inequality” she argues that America puts excessive focus upon hunger issues among the poor when there are many other important issues that go unnoticed. Poppendieck believes that it is time to find a way to shift the discourse from undernutrition to unfairness, from hunger to inequality. In today's society, there are many food banks, food drives, soup kitchens, etc. Food is extremely abundant in America, therefore Poppendieck's statement is proven true when she states that there is too much focus on hunger. Throughout this text, she strongly supports her claims about hunger, equality, and poverty in general.
The debate team of Wiley College faced many colleges to be recognized and finally in the end winning a debate against the reigning debating champions, Harvard University. One of the debaters who caught my attention was James Farmer Jr., the youngest on the team that started out as an alternative. James Farmer sought recognition from adults and wanted to show everyone he was capable of debating. James Farmer incorporates a lot of Ethos and Pathos into his speech making, allowing him to leave his audience filled with emotions and in awe. Although James Farmer interested me, especially the way he presented his final speech, James Farmer and I are very different in the way we deliver our speeches.
The outside speaker that I saw took place on Monday November eleventh two thousand and thirteen, in the Saint Ignatius Science Center room one hundred and fifteen. The speaker of this presentation was Tom McDonnell elected CEO of the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation. Throughout McDonnell’s speech he talked about his experience attending Rockhurst University when it was an all boys school and his life after he graduated form Rockhurst and started his career. I thought that the speech was very well organized because I would assume that he made very good valid points, and when I say assume, I will elaborate on that more later on in my paper. It seemed that there was a clear introduction and body, but I was kind of surprised with the conclusion because he seemed to have just ended his speech. Or it might have been that his conclusion was so long that I just assumed to be part of the body.

Food insecurity is an issue faced by millions of Americans every day, and the biggest group affected by this is working families with children. Food insecurity is so big that the United States government has now recognized it and provided a definition for it. The United States government has defined food insecurity as “a household level economic and social condition of limited or uncertain access to adequate food” (USDA.gov). Food banks and anti-hunger advocates agree that some of the causes of food insecurity are stagnant wages, increase in housing costs, unemployment, and inflation of the cost of food. These factors have caused food banks to see a change in the groups of people needing assistance. Doug O’Brien, director of public policy and research at Chicago-based Second Harvest says “’we’ve seen a real shift in who we serve. A decade ago, it was almost always homeless, single men and chronic substance abusers. Now we have children and working families at soup kitchens’” (Koch). These families that are feeling the effects of food insecurity will not be only ones affected by it, but all of America. Studies have shown that there is a link between food security, performance in the classroom, and obesity. If this issue is not faced head on, America will have a generation of children not fully prepared for the workforce and high health insurance rates due to obesity health issues.
There are many policy issues that affect families in today’s society. Hunger is a hidden epidemic and one major issue that American’s still face. It is hard to believe that in this vast, ever growing country, families are still starving. As stated in the book Growing Up Empty, hunger is running wild through urban, rural, and even suburban communities. This paper will explore the differing perspectives of the concerned camp, sanguine camp, and impatient camp. In addition, each camps view, policy agenda, and values that underlie their argument on hunger will be discussed.
The most interesting topic to me throughout the quarter was the topic of food waste and how food progressed over time as well as the appreciation for food diminishes. The topic of world hunger is prevalent throughout the quarter. Especially during the beginning of the quarter, I remember reading, “How agriculture can improve health and nutrition”, written by Jared Diamond. From the reading, I learned that 805 million people go hungry and many people suffer from hidden hunger. After realizing a number of people who go hungry fascinates me and made me wonder the possible ways to resolve this issue.
