The Maze Runner by James Dashner is one of the most thrilling survival stories I have ever read. This novel is about a different version of cat and mouse inside the maze, except instead of mice, it’s the Gladers and instead of cats, it's grievers - a gruesome machine that hunts and stings anyone it comes across. The humans have been living in the centre of the maze for almost 3 years, where they have made a village for themselves for safety, and the grievers can't get them. For them to survive, they must adventure the maze and find out its secrets so they can finally leave and be free. It can bring out two sides of people, either, bring out the best of people with determination and the will to survive, or people can go insane, give up and lose hope. When Thomas arrives in the maze everything still seems normal, their living situation the same, but with the arrival of Teresa it starts the “beginning of the end”. This is seen as she is the first girl ever to arrive in the maze and arrives with a note saying, “She’s the last one. Ever”. Then later Teresa telepathically says to Tom “Tom, I just triggered the Ending.” The next day the sky has disappeared and in its absence is a giant grey ceiling. Everyone realises that something has changed and the idea of an end dawns on the gladers. In the face of the end with the fear for survival, Thomas and Minho and others set out to try and finally solve the previously impossible to solve maze. They use the new emotion fear for survival for themselves and others to help motivate them to solve the maze. Other gladers such as Alby become consumed with their fear. This showed me that the people who embrace their fear and use it to give them a purpose to act, to help/save themselves will survive. Thomas says, “Holy crap, I’m scared.” Then Teresa says, “Holy crap, you’re human. You should be scared.” This shows it is human nature to be scared in the face of real danger. Even the best of us get scared. It is part of being human. This book showed me how people can either use their fear of death to do everything in their power to survive, which encourages them on to do amazing things. Or people give up, lose hope and give in to their fate and do nothing. This is seen in society today with the stories of people being everyday heroes with dangerous, risky situations bring out the best in them; they risk their lives to save others.
