Is the history of slavery repeating itself? How can the issue about modern day slavery, such as human trafficking, go unnoticed? Many people might think that slavery is a thing of the past. In fact, the slavery of colonial period mutated to modern day slavery which is largely known as human trafficking. The thirteenth amendment was successful in abolishing slavery overtly. However, the concept of slavery became a global underground issue in the society of 21st century, just like after civil right movements racism thought to be ended but became modern racism. According to the International Labor Organization (2007), “almost 21 million people are victims of forced labor [and of those] 11.4 million are women and girls and 9.5 million are men and boys.” The U.S. department of State estimates that about 800,000 people are trafficked annually across international borders.
An unremitting modern slavery takes various forms and human rights violations such as the practice of child labor, bonded labor, trafficking in persons, and forced migrant labor. Healey (2014) writes that “contemporary slavery is similar to Noel hypothesis: the motivation is supplied by a desire for profits, and the populations from which slaves are taken are relatively powerless and lack the resources to defend themselves.” The Noel hypothesis shed some light over the dynamics of slavery in the United States that how U.S. becomes the popular destination for trafficking victims.

The type of slavery in the 1800s revolves around the African American group particularly. The modern slavery concept is much broader; in fact, extends throughout the world in many different forms. How can we identify human trafficking and why do they call it modern day slavery? The way we can identify human trafficking, are to look for signs of physical abuse and limited access to medical care (Kelly and Bokhari, 2012), and (Zimmerman et al, 2003). Either the victims of trafficking are lured in with promises for a better life, or better working conditions to where they have an idea of thinking they will be able to send money back home to their families. Due to thier circumstances, many of the victims are kept isolated to where they have limited access to medical or dental care. Often due to these times children may not resemble those who are supposed to be, their parents or, they are with different adults at different times.

In 1865 the United States passed the thirteenth amendment of the constitution which formally abolished the practice of slavery in the United States. Over a century has went by since this day, and yet somewhere behind the mask of freedom that our country holds with such pride lingers a hidden trade. This is the trade of modern day slavery that remains prevalent in our country. As a people who were born free, futures ripe with opportunities and choices, it’s hard for most in American society to truly imagine slavery. Slavery, as an institution, has existed since the dawn of civilization. However, by the fifteenth century, slavery in Northern Europe was almost nonexistent. Nevertheless, with the discovery of the New World, the English experienced a shortage of laborers to work the lands they claimed. The English tried to enslave the natives, but they resisted and were usually successful in escaping. Furthermore, with the decline of indentured servants, the Europeans looked elsewhere for laborers. It is then, within the British colonies, do the colonists turn to the enslavement of Africans. Although Native Americans were readily available and were initially numerous, Africans became the primary slave used in the colonies because the Native American slaves could not fill the colonists' labor needs, while the Africans did.
According to estimates, more than 700,000 people are trafficked every year for the purposes of sexual exploitation and forced labour. They are transported across borders and sold into modern-day slavery. Over the past decade, trafficking in human beings has reached epidemic proportions. No country is immune. Clawson (2009) discusses how the search for work abroad has been fueled by economic disparity, high unemployment and disruption of traditional livelihoods. Trafficking in humans is a massive underground industry throughout the United States as well as close to home, mainly Chicago and it’s suburbs. “Human Trafficking is the recruiting, harboring,moving or obtaining a person by force, fraud or coercion, for the purposes of involuntary servitude, debt bondage or sexual exploitation( Human Trafficking in Illinois ).” Human Trafficking is one of the largest and is the fastest growing criminal industry in the world. Human trafficking, or the selling and buying of people, is a well-hidden yet prominent issue within today’s society. It is both an immoral and horrific topic that needs brought to attention and dealt with. When human beings are manipulated into work, sexual servitude, or economic hardship, human trafficking is occurring. In the year of 2006, only one individual is convicted of human trafficking per 800 victims (UNGIFT). By looking at straight statistics, reasons human trafficking happens, and the toll it has on people, it is very clear that this is a major issue that is happening in our world.
The word “slavery” brings back horrific memories of human beings. Bought and sold as property, and dehumanized with the risk and implementation of violence, at times nearly inhumane. The majority of people in the United States assumes and assures that slavery was eliminated during the nineteenth century with the Emancipation Proclamation. Unfortunately, this is far from the truth; rather, slavery and the global slave trade continue to thrive till this day. In fact, it is likely that more individuals are becoming victims of human trafficking across borders against their will compared to the vast number of slaves that we know in earlier times. Slavery is no longer about legal ownership asserted, but instead legal ownership avoided, the thought provoking idea that with old slavery, slaves were maintained, compared to modern day slavery in which slaves are nearly disposable, under the same institutionalized systems in which violence and economic control over the disadvantaged is the common way of life. Modern day slavery is insidious to the public but still detrimental if not more than old American slavery.
