The Reality of Human Trafficking Many think that slavery is dead, but is it really? Or is it something that just gets swept under the rug and simply goes unnoticed? When we think of slavery we think of the Civil Rights movement, we think back to The Underground Rail Road , or the “I Have a Dream Speech” by Martin Luther King, Jr. Many fail to realize that slavery still exist today as Human Trafficking. In the article “The Disturbing Reality of Human Trafficking and Children” by Allison Chawla , she focuses on how slavery still exist today and how it has dramatically increased over the years. The fact that no one is stepping up to help out the children and woman being trafficked every day. One example is “The amount of space in protective shelters in the Kansas City area is not nearly great enough to provide beds and shelters for all of the minors brought in requiring necessary protection. Only 25 beds are available to girls out of the 214 beds that are available through the juvenile court system. Most of the services that are available do not serve victims who are being controlled by a pimp or trafficker because they are statistically short term although in need of protection. Once released majority of the victims return to their pimps or traffickers.” (Crawla) Most of the young victims are the ones who are neglected by families or run aways even many children in the Foster Care system. Traffickers are finding victims through the internet , after school programs, malls, movie theaters and many other places. People don 't have a clue of the torture that is going on right under neath our noses because they believe that slavery has died. We rarely see anything on the news about human trafficking. So how are we supposed to help those in need if no one knows how big of an industry human trafficking is? Chawla wants people to know the truth about human trafficking and give awareness to those who don 't see whats right in front of
