The last reason he would have said this is because of what the Spirit of Christmas Future showed Scrooge. Well, this also isn’t true because when he hears that Tiny Tim would die if he didn’t change he does say, “ No, no,” “ Oh, no, kind Spirit! say he will be spared.” After this, though, Scrooge completely forgets about it and continues on with the spirit. If he had changed at that moment he would have said something like this, “ No, I can’t let this happen spirit, I can’t, please spirit free me from this nightmare so I can save this little boy.” If Scrooge had changed at that moment Tiny Tim would have had a larger dinner and wouldn’t have to suffer the way he
We see that he is immediately very touched when he sees this scene before him, which is exactly the reaction the ghost hoped for. Analysis of Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol Charles Dickens, one of the greatest novelists in the English language, was born in 1812 into a middle-class family of precarious economic status. His father was a clerk in the Navy Pay Office at the time of Dickens's birth; by the time Charles was ten, however, his father was in debtor's prison, a victim of bad luck, mismanagement, and irresponsibility. In order to help support the family during this time of crisis, young Dickens went to work in the packing department of a factory that manufactured blacking--a compound of charcoal, soot, sugar, oil, and fat used to polish boots. This was a period of dirty and draining labor which one critic has described as an experience of "heartrending monotony and ignominy." Throughout his life Dickens would remember the harshness of the working conditions imposed on himself and the other boys in that blacking factory, and would direct much of his energy as a writer and moralist toward the reform of such oppressive conditions.
Dickens as a well-known newspaper reporter wrote his first books which were mostly a work of sketches or short stories. When Dickens wrote A Christmas Carol he did it mostly because of the decline of traditions and religion around the holid...
In this Stave, Dickens shows the importance of kindness by showing Scrooge’s absence of it and the effects of his harmful indifference. Scrooge is taken into his own past and shown memories of when he was young. The Ghost shows him scenes of when he was small and alone on Christmas. This memory makes him regret his harshness towards a young caroler that had come to his door the previous day. He sees that he lacked kindness and wishes he gave something to the caroler. His indifference towards the caroler insured that Scrooge would remain alone. The Ghost also reminds Scrooge of his beloved sister, Fannie who had died and left only her son. “’Always a delicate creature, whom a breath might have withered,’ said the Ghost. ‘But she had a large heart!’ ‘So she had,’ cried Scrooge. ‘You’re right. I will not gainsay it, Spirit. God forbid!’ ‘She died a woman,’ said the Ghost, ‘and had, as I think, children.’ ‘One child,’ Scrooge returned. ‘True,’ said the Ghost. ‘Your nephew!’ Scrooge seemed uneasy in his mind; and answered briefly, ‘Yes.’” (pg. 33-34). Scrooge’s only connection to his kind and gentle sister is his nephew, who also shares Fannie’s sweet nature. Scrooge is then filled with regret because of his callous treatment and lack of relationship with his nephew, who only wanted to be kind and spread the joy of the season. Scrooge’s sheer indifference and lack of kindness towards his nephew prevented
The final nail in the coffin, literally was when the ghost of Christmas Yet to Come is when Scrooge was shown his own grave. Lighting crashed and Scrooge screamed in absolute terror at the sight of his name on this haunting headstone. They say never walk over a grave, but what if it was your own? Well Scrooge didn’t want to find out when he “ I beg you spirit take me back! No more please! Mercy!” (Dickens 21).
The first spirit that comes to visit Scrooge is the Ghost of Christmas Past, a man with old and young features, a white tunic, a branch of fresh green holly, and fresh summer flowers. The spirit shows Scrooge some of the most regretful moments in his past. The first is when Scrooge lets his little sister Fan go. Scrooge had a very strong bond with his sister and loved her very much. Next, Scrooge saw his former employer, Fezziwig.
Charles dickens was not only one of England's first great novelists, but also one of the most prevelant, enduring figures in using fiction to effectively communicate his ideas, as well as criticize social and moral ideals throughout the Victorian era. Through "A Christmas Carol", Dickens uses the wealthy, excentric caricature of Ebeneezer Scrooge as well as the symbolic meanings of the three ghosts to convey and portray a sense of pity and uneven distribution of wealth and class during his time. Each groups of symbols and characters play a vital role in Dickens' critique of Victorian society, as well as include solutions for the issues that persisted.
