The Revolutionary War was a war in the 1770’s between the American Colonies and Great Britain, as the colonies were trying to gain their independence. Obviously, the American Colonies went on to win the war, although greatly outnumber and underpowered. They were able to win independence from Great Britain as a result of great leadership and war tactics. Tactics are plans or a strategy to get a specific result or ending. The definition of tactics explains perfectly as to how it helped the colonist win the war. Even though underpowered, their leaders had a strategy as to what needed to be done to get the ending they desired. Leaders during the Revolutionary War used intelligent tactics to best fit the terrain and give their side the advantage in the battles of Bunker Hill and of Lexington and Concord. Their leader, Joseph Warren, was stationed in Concord and sent out two messengers to warn the people after he was informed the British were to march on Concord. Only 77 militiamen were in Concord at the time and were met by roughly 700 British soldiers. The British forced the colonist out of Concord, and after looting everything they pleased, the British began the trip back to Boston. By this time, nearly 2000 militiamen had gathered outside Concord. As the British marched in tight formations towards Boston, the militiamen began shooting at them from the back, hiding behinds trees and other things in the forest. British Soldiers began abandoning their formations to retreat faster from the colonist. They retreated all the way through Lexington to Charlestown Neck, were naval reinforcements were waiting (Battle of Lexington and Concord).
