The Importance Of Storage Tanks In The LNG Terminal

The tanks constitute of about 25% of the investment in the LNG terminal. It is the most significant part of the terminal in terms of the size and money invested. Storage tank selection is done on the basis of few important factors: 1) Storage capacity and number of tanks, 2) Tank operating conditions: Temperature and Pressure, 3) Storage safety considerations: Type of Containment and Rollover  Storage capacity and number of tanks: Minimum storage capacity of the tank is equal to maximum volume of LNG unloaded from the ships. The actual capacity is much more than minimum required capacity. Besides the unloaded LNG, another factor that plays a vital role in determining the storage tank capacity is send-out requirement. Typical average storage capacity is about 20 days of send-out. Number of storage tanks depend on storage capacity of the terminal and capacity of the tank. The tank capacity mainly depends on applicable codes …show more content…

There are 3 configurations available, namely: Single containment, double containment and full containment tanks. Figure 9: Storage tank containment type: Single containment A typical, above ground, single containment tank is with 9% Ni inner tank, a carbon steel outer tank and a steel roof. The outer wall is for the purpose of retention and protection of the insulation and containing the gas pressure. Outer tank is not designed to contain the liquid in case of leakage. Hence, for protection purpose, there is a dike or a bund wall and is at a significant space from the tank. The bund wall is able to hold all the liquid, but it adds significantly to the plot space of the plant. Construction a single-containment tank is cheaper and faster, but to look at a broad prospective, considering the extra plot-space it needs and more piping in between the tanks because of this plot-space, single-containment tanks are not the best option for
