This quote is said by Chimamanda Adichie and it deals with how we have the power to change culture into a more just society for women. Power is a very important aspect in a society and it determines who is going to be more superior. Power produces domination and therefore it creates and destroys. In the movie Hidden Figures, it deals with how cultural ideologies of male dominance are practiced in a society that leads to discrimination and women injustice. Culture teaches women they don’t belong in an environment that is completely dominated by men, in a mathematics and engineers field. The workplace gives these women a sense of power because they are earning money and they don’t have to depend on men. In the book-----, it mentions that usually the person in the household that brings money to the house is usually the one in power in t because they are finically providing money in the house. In the workplace, they also faced unfairly treatment because of the obstacles for example with the bathroom when Katherine Goble didn’t have easy access and she had to spend half an hour walking across each time she needed to use the bathroom. During this time period, the idealistic view of a woman was running the household while the husband provided a source of income. For a woman not to follow this role, society deemed as untraditional. However, many women began to criticize this role because they believed they should be granted the same opportunities as men. For example, in Document 3, a woman can be seen working in a factory. For the past century, the United States of America has made countless advancements in technology, medicine, and many other fronts. All throughout American history people have been experiencing prejudice, whether it is because of their race, their class, their ethnicity, etc. Another deciding characteristic of inequality is gender. American women during the turn of the 19th century were constantly treated like they were inferior to men. Men got better everything from food, to clothes, to opportunities and jobs. Women didn’t have control over their belongings, their ideas, or even their bodies. They faced a constant struggle of conflict between standing up for themselves, and remaining obedient to the men in their lives.
Patricia Hill Collins outlines the existence of three different dimensions of gender oppression: institutional, symbolic, and individual. The institutional dimension consists of systemic relationship of domination structured through social institutions, such as government, the workplace or education institutions. In other words, this dimension explains “who has the power”. This is completely related to a patriarchal society. Patriarchy is the manifestation and institutionalism of male dominance. This means that men hold power in all institutions, while women are denied the access to this power. The role women play in today’s society is a drastic change from the previous role. Women used to be confined to the superiority of the man. Physically, mentally, and emotionally abused, belittled, embarrassed, and silenced. These are just a few examples of the emotion from the isolated treatment of the past.
