Last, but not least, extensive reading is one of the most pleasurable ways to acquire comprehensible input and understanding of the text. In all, depending on the purpose of the reading and other situational factors, learners must acquire valuable reading strategies to apply to their reading to make the task a successful one and to become skillful readers.
2.4 Motivation to read academic texts In light of this, readers need to be motivated to read. As discussed in Knutson´s (1997) article, a fundamental element of motivation is understanding the purpose of the task. That is to say, if learners are to be motivated to read extensively, they need to not only understand the readings purpose but also be motivated to take on the task while finding it a pleasing act. While some learners read to be identified as good learners, others who read solely for pleasure are more likely to be high achievers (Guthrie, Klauda & Morrison, 2012). For instance, learners with high intrinsic motivation are noted to use more strategies and have more comprehension of science texts (Guthrie & Wigfield, 2000). What is more, learners who are intrinsically motivated in their learning tend to read more (Guthrie & Cox, 2001) and as a result of more exposure to written texts learners´ comprehension and vocabulary knowledge increased (Echols et al., 1996; Stanovich, 2000). However, those who read for rewards, to meet requirements or to avoid embarrassment are more inclined to become low achievers.
