Becoming a Certified Nursing Assistant: My Journey

The summer of my junior year of high school, I became a Certified Nurse’s Assistant. It was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. Becoming a Certified Nursing Assistant has helped me support my daughter and allowed me to help other people when they need it. The process wasn't easy, but the rewards are great. The process to complete a certificate as a Certified Nurse’s Assistant starts by enrolling, completing the bookwork, and passing the state requirements. The first step to becoming a Certified Nursing Assistant in Illinois is to enroll in a state approved Certified Nursing Assistant program. I chose Lake Land College in Mattoon, IL to complete this requirement. Lake Land offered an eight week summer program for anyone over the age of sixteen. So, I enrolled and started my journey in the healthcare field. The CNA program is intense and vigorous. Everyone has their academic strengths and weaknesses and for me the book part was the hardest part. Not only was all the information new but it was presented in a condensed format so you had a lot to learn very quickly. Patient care is the main reason I chose to be a career in the healthcare field. During training a Certified Nurse’s Aide is required to master twenty-one patient care skills. These skills include taking vital signs, assisting with bathing and dressing, changing bed pans, and assistance with exercise and mobility. It is important CNA’s know the proper way of helping patients ambulate, shave, and providing perineal care so the patient does not get a skin infection. Perineal care is often included in bathing and involves cleaning the perineum, the external genitalia, and the surrounding skin.
