The Hunger Games cinema production is based on the trilogy novel series created by Suzanne Collins. The film is centered on the novel series written in post-apocalyptic era during a time of oppression and opposition. Austrian-American film expert, Francis Lewis in 2012, directs the film that is told through the viewpoint of the main character Katniss Everdeen. The intended audience of this film is geared primarily towards individuals who have read the trilogy series and understand the backstory. The film also appeals to the young adult audience as well as those who enjoy dystopian action-thriller films.
The movie depicts the novel’s dystopian society built in the nation of Panem, which is home to thirteen districts, but only twelve of them are fully operational. Each district lives in varying state of poverty, but they posses a certain industrial talent that differs from the next district. In this film, the lottery for the 74th Hunger Game has begun and the Capitol has made its way through eleven districts and has approached District 12. Techniques such as low angle shots portray the characters as powerful and dominant figures, whereas high angle shots depict powerlessness, and inferior positions against a large background liven the film and show the battle for power between the Capitol and Katniss. Costuming, lighting, and the camera’s point of view also introduce new perspectives as the film progresses especially from Katniss Everdeen as she endures the challenges of the Hunger Games.
