Hubble is a telescope used by NASA as one of the orbiting "great observatories”. Hubble was launched in 1990, changing the history of astronomy since Galileo's telescope with an expected lifespan of 15 years, although will really be about 22 now. Early on, Hubble was used to discover galaxies beyond the Milky Way. The purpose of the Hubble Telescope is to gather light from cosmic objects so scientists can have a better understanding of the universe around us. Hubble is one of the best telescopes to ever orbit the earth. It was one of the very first telescope to be placed in space. The purpose of Hubble is to take pictures of the galaxy as it orbits around the Earth at 17,500 mph. These images are very detailed because the Hubble Space Telescope orbits around the outer atmosphere. Even though weight is not an issue in space, Hubble weighs 24,500 pounds. Many different instruments are used by Hubble, including the Cosmic Origins Spectrograph. Originally installed in May 2009, the Cosmic Origins Spectrograph replaced the Corrective Optics Space Telescope Axial Replacement (COSTAR), which corrected the blurred pictures in its first service mission. The Cosmic Origins Spectrograph focuses on ultraviolet light. Because of the Cosmic Origins Spectrograph, the Hubble’s sensitivity was improved ten times more in the ultraviolet light and increases up to 70 times when looking at extremely faint objects. The purpose of the Cosmic Origins Spectrograph is to break down radiation using the ultraviolet light. The Cosmic Origins Spectrograph, otherwise abbreviated to COS, studies the evolution of the galaxy and the universe around us.

The original age of the universe was thought to be 20 to 30 billion years until Hubble revealed the age to be about 13 to 14 billion years old.
One of the biggest disadvantages of Hubble is how expensive the whole entire project has been. A spectrum is a group of light wavelengths that are ordered in relation to their wavelength length. The electromagnetic spectrum consists radio waves, microwaves, infrared, visible, ultraviolet, X-rays and gamma rays. Cosmic rays are to scientists much like photons are to astronomers. Just as astronomers use light (or photons) to view our galaxy and beyond, scientists use cosmic rays to infer useful properties about our galaxy. In fact, cosmic rays offer one of the few ways in which scientists can actually sample real matter outside of our solar system. By identifying the various nuclei that are dispersed throughout our Galaxy, scientists hope to unravel the mechanisms that actually produce these nuclei -- from stellar nucleosynthesis to nucleosynthesis within supernovae to nuclear fragmentation. Just think, the iron in your blood came from a supernova billions of years ago in our solar neighborhood! To measure cosmic rays directly, before they have been slowed down and broken up by the atmosphere, research is carried out by instruments carried on spacecraft and high altitude balloons, using particle detectors similar to those used in nuclear and high energy physics experiments. However, there are other means of studying cosmic rays that reveal new information.. An analysis of cosmic rays using a cloud chamber reveals a connection between frequency and altitude.
On Saturday April 9th, Alex and I took a trip to LA and visited the Griffith Observatory. Alex who is also in astronomy thought it would be a good idea to do the horizon project together and go to the Griffith Observatory and see one of the shows at the Samuel Oschin Planetarium called Centered of the Universe.
Just recently a major discovery was found with the help of a device known as The Hubble Telescope. This telescope has just recently found what many astronomers believe to be a black hole, After being focuses on a star orbiting empty space. Several pictures of various radiation fluctuations and other diverse types of readings that could be read from that area which the black hole is suspected to be in.
Perhaps the most famous discovery is that the Earth revolves around the Sun and the Earth is not the center of the universe (even though he was discredited at the time). Newton was also involved with telescopes. After his growing interest with light bending, he applied his knowledge of the reflecting and refracting properties of light and invented the first reflective telescopes. Newton's reflective telescopes vastly improve the clarity of images as well as escaping chromatic abberation. He graduated from the University of Chicago and served in WWI before he settled down to lead research in the field of astrophysics at Mount Wilson Observatory in California. President Dwight D. Eisenhower created NASA in 1958 with the purpose of peaceful rather than military space exploration and research to contribute to society. Just 11 years after the creation, NASA put Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin on the moon, the first humans to accomplish this feat. NASA’s research and innovation looked promising but it came at a cost. Money, resources, and spacecraft accidents most famously Apollo 13 all hindered NASA’s research. In the 21st century the debate between funding for NASA is at its peak since the birth of the organization in 1958 especially when there are numerous problems throughout the world. Is the money spent on space exploration worth the advantages and advances it contributes to society?

Overall we can get a pretty good insight on how or Solar System was formed, yes there are still certain aspects of it that are hard to make sense of, as well as debates over which theory is correct, such as Core Accretion vs. Disk Instability, but overall I feel it is pretty amazing what we have learned about the nature of system and look forward to future discoveries.

A telescope is a device used to magnify distant objects. Telescopes can be used to look at things on earth or at objects in space. The telescopes for use on the earth are known as terrestrial telescopes and the telescopes for looking into space are known as astronomical telescopes.
This telescope is the result of an international collaboration of 17 countries lead by NASA, European Space Agency and Canadian Space Agency. It will help us determine the geometry of the universe and enable us to establish whether the universe will expand forever.
