There is a lot more to him than you guess, and a deal more than he has any idea of himself. You may (possibly) all life to thank me yet” (Tolkien 19). In The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien, it’s about a hobbit named Bilbo Baggins, whom was given an adventure with a company of dwarves by Gandalf the wizard. Without real knowledge of this adventure Bilbo and the Dwarves were sent to kill Smaug which was a magnificent, large, and very dangerous dragon. For example, when the dwarves were captured by the trolls and Gandalf came to save them. “Excellent! said Gandalf, as he walked out from behind the tree, and helped Bilbo climbed down out of a thorn- bush. Then Bilbo understood. It was the wizard’s voice that had kept the trolls bickering and quarrelling, until the light came and made an end to them” (Tolkien 40). Gandalf came to their rescue and imitated the voice of the trolls until the sun came up and turned them into stone. Without Gandalf, the dwarves would be food for the trolls because Bilbo was not be able to do anything because he was scared. Another example of Gandalf being a guardian is when Bilbo seeks to find him and the dwarves, when Bilbo was trapped with Gollum. “After escaping from Gollum, he faced the same goblins that he had just had a recent run in with. The goblins chased after him and tried to capture him, but the goblins were not able to catch Bilbo because couldn’t because he was hiding behind a big barrel. While hiding behind the barrel he ran for the door, and when he got to the door the goblins spotted Bilbo shadow they went after him. Luckily with the help of the ring he was able to escape from them in the forest. After escaping from the goblins, Bilbo didn’t know where he was, but he did not give up. Mr. Baggins’s eyes are sharper than yours, if you have not seen each night after dark a great bear going along with us or sitting far off in the moon watching our camps. Not only to guard you and guide you, but to keep an eye on the ponies too. Beorn may be your friend, but he loves his animals as his children. You do not guess what kindness he has shown you in letting dwarves ride them so far and so fast, not what would happen to you, if you tried to take them into the forest’
