There are two types of films that associate with the idea of male friendship. The first is the buddy film, in which the characters often have contrasting personalities but gain some sort of understanding and mutual respect for each other. The second is the bromance film, which further expresses the idea of male friendship by incorporating emotion and activity. The Hangover is a bromance with elements of a buddy film because of how the characterization of the four main characters and the setting of the film makes audiences relate to the guys’ experience. The bromance element of the film comes from the personalities of the four main characters. Of the four men, the key person who brings everyone closer is Alan. Unlike his friends, Alan is single and is more concerned with keeping the friendship he has together. Most of the movie takes place in Las Vegas, a place full of action and a place some audience members may have been to. The Hangover takes on Las Vegas’ glamorous side and seedy side to showcase how the guys are able to manage themselves in certain situations. The glamourous side comes from overlooking the Las Vegas strip at night on the rooftop of Caesar’s Palace and Alan’s gambling montage, for example. These scenes are where the guys are seen in a positive atmosphere of bonding and are at peace and concentration with themselves. The seedy side comes the drugs used inside the guys’ drinks and the violent themes the movie has in certain scenes, such as the run ins with Leslie Chow and his gang. These show the guys’ fear and quick thinking to avoid any sort of harm to themselves. Both sides of Las Vegas the guys encounter turn their friendship from a mutual understanding into a bromance because the events that occur on both sides bring them closer
