There are two types of films that associate with the idea of male friendship. The first is the buddy film, in which the characters often have contrasting personalities but gain some sort of understanding and mutual respect for each other. The second is the bromance film, which further expresses the idea of male friendship by incorporating emotion and activity. The Hangover is a bromance with elements of a buddy film because of how the characterization of the four main characters and the setting of the film makes audiences relate to the guys’ experience. The bromance element of the film comes from the personalities of the four main characters. Of the four men, the key person who brings everyone closer is Alan. Unlike his friends, Alan is single and is more concerned with keeping the friendship he has together. Most of the movie takes place in Las Vegas, a place full of action and a place some audience members may have been to. The Hangover takes on Las Vegas’ glamorous side and seedy side to showcase how the guys are able to manage themselves in certain situations. The glamourous side comes from overlooking the Las Vegas strip at night on the rooftop of Caesar’s Palace and Alan’s gambling montage, for example. These scenes are where the guys are seen in a positive atmosphere of bonding and are at peace and concentration with themselves. The seedy side comes the drugs used inside the guys’ drinks and the violent themes the movie has in certain scenes, such as the run ins with Leslie Chow and his gang. These show the guys’ fear and quick thinking to avoid any sort of harm to themselves. These days the money and personnel that go into creating a movie is scandalous. It is almost unbelievable that every time they don’t come out with anything less than a classic. Luckily this is true in the case of "Ferris Buller’s Day Off", which features some of the best casted actors for a long time and costs in the region of $5.8 million. Over the course of the novel, there were many instances of the male characters bonding together to accomplish a variety of tasks. In the beginning, Dracula attempts to befriend Jonathan Harker as a way to allay his fears. Further along, we find the relationship between Quincey, Arthur and Jack Seward to be friendly and close. Van Helsing and Jonathan add to that mix to create the ultimate male friendship; the group of men who go out to fight battles together and achieve a victory. Although there are many other themes in the novel, homosociality is the most prominent and well evidenced by the words and actions of the characters.
In the movie, The Castle mateship is portrayed in minuscule acts of kindness to large acts of intrepidity. The lavish parties in Gatsby are perfect illustrations of our social lives that have become overzealous and desperate in light of the controversial prohibition laws. Fitzgerald describes the “floating rounds of cocktails permeat[ing] the garden” and “amusement park” behavior of typical partygoers with unmatchable insight (40). The debonair host, Gatsby, is a man we have all met at some point—significantly wealthy and relentlessly mysterious.
From when they met, the impression of mateship was there and it continued to build stronger and stronger all the way through the film. Little thing they would say to each other or would do to each other just really represents the feeling of that theme. The catch phrase that you notice so many times during the movie, although getting serious each time, is when one would say “I’ll see you when I see you” and then the other would reply with “Not if I see you first”. These types of things drill into your mind that they are great friends and would stick up for each other no matter what. It’s the epitome of the theme mateship and these two characters show it the whole way through the movie. Near the beginning of the film when Frank and Archy are traipsing across the vast outback of Australia, you see both with a suitcase in hand because, like all young men at this time, they thought they were off on a great adventure together as mates. Of course when they get to Gallipoli that whole mindset changes but the mateship is always going to be there between them. You can’t take away good old Aussie mateship. So Frank and Archy really represented that theme. Obviously the reader of this essay can now see how this movie is wholly based around the theme

It’s centered near an alley and has a neon “Charlie’s Bar” outside the building. Bryon and Mark usually go there to relax for a while, get a couple free cokes from Charlie, and hustle people into the pool. Though Bryon and Mark are still underage to be in the bar, Charlie keeps a safe guard watching over the two, just in case one or two police come in for a drink. Bryon has a growing I.O.U fund for Charlie since he’s been getting about two cokes every time they go to the bar, but Charlie lets it slide because they two are good friends. ‘Lad flicks’ or ‘lad movies’ is a type of film genre that emerged in the late 1990s. They are defined as a “‘hybrid of “buddy movies”, romantic comedies and “chick flicks”, which centre on the trials and tribulations of a young man as he grows up to become a ‘real man’. ‘Lad flicks’ respond in part to the much-debated ‘crisis in masculinity’” (Benjamin A. Brabon 116). This genre of film explored what it meant to be a ‘real man’ in the twentieth century and in order to do so, they would have to grow up and leave their juvenile ways behind to enter the heterosexual world. Gender relations in ‘lad flicks’ portray masculinity as a troubled, anxious cultural category hiding behind a humorous façade and also rely greatly on a knowing gaze and irony. The two ‘lad flicks’ that will be analyzed are The 40-Year-Old Virgin (Judd Apatow 2005) and Role Models (David Wain 2008).
