How the Grinch Stole Christmas, the classic tale that teaches kids that Christmas is not about presents or trees. Rather about being with your loved ones and sharing this time you have with them. As a kid you find it very funny how grouchy and angry the Grinch was. You wondered why he felt that way but was happy with the ending and you never really think about it again. As a college student studying personality you come to realize that the Grinch is the perfect character to study personality on. His transformation from being a Grinch to having a big heart and appreciating the meaning of Christmas and joining Whoville is very interesting and can be analyzed. The interactionist approach to personality is very similar to Murray’s theories in the aspect that people change their behavior from situation to situation. As ones situation changes their personality changes. I find this very interesting and use the example of someone who may act differently in front of their friends vs. their parents. They may act very nice and polite in front of their parents but then when they meet up with their friends they become a completely different …show more content…

I completely agree with the idea that our personalities change over time based on our environments. The Grinch’s personality was angry and bitter because he was lonely and never got his internal needs met. However when he was accepted into whoville and given the opportunity to experience Christmas with others who actually cared about him his personality completely changed. He was able to get his internal needs met and he was able to be happy and live in harmony with the who’s. I think Murray’s theory works very well with the Grinch’s personality and I don’t think another theory would have explained it any better. I believe that I agree with this theory because I am very in favor of the interactionist approach myself. I believe that our environments are a huge factor in the way our personalities develop and change over time, and the Grinch is a great example of
