The Grand Budapest Hotel reenacts the adventures of M. Gustave, a concierge (a caretaker) at a well-known European hotel, and Zero Moustafa, a lobby boy who becomes Gustave’s most trusted friend. The story is about a theft and recovery of the famous Renaissance painting and the battle of a huge family fortune set against a changing backdrop over 30 years and two world wars. This movie was filled with historical references and knowing the History of Western Civilization did help me better understand the movie. References to Eastern Europe’s past and present were evident throughout the film. The Fair was a major influence on the spirt invention associated with the Gilded Age, but it was also influenced by the spirit of the time.
This is an immigration movie geared towards kids to show and teach them about immigration to America. It shows them the reasons they (the Mousekewitz) left their homeland Russia to come to America. In their case it was to escape the Czarist rule of the cats, parallel to most immigrants who escaped their land due to religious and political persecution. Once aboard the ship to America, it showed the long and unpleasant trip to New York Harbor, where in this movie, Fievel gets separated from his family to inclimate weather. Once they arrive in New York Harbor, it shows children the happiness immigrants got when they saw the statue of liberty and the process through Ellis Island to become a citizen of America. The rest of the movie takes place in America where it shows “political machines”, such as Warren T. Rat, who really is a cat but takes advantage of new immigrants by dressing as a mouse and receiving the mice’s trust. With trust came their money and broken promises, just as “political machines” really did back then. The movie shows the immigrants hardships and poor living conditions in America with tenement housing and unsanitary conditions.

The fair had reached over twenty-six million visitors and is the birthplace for many trends that have shaped modern America. The fair took place in 1893 to commemorate the four hundredth anniversary. Wes Anderson’s The Grand Budapest Hotel (2014) uses the human figure of Monsieur Gustave (Ralph Fiennes) and his pattern of behavior within the mise-en-scene of the film to show that acts of kindness drive the plot of the film forward in order to illustrate the power of kindness and the positive results that it can have on our lives. Over the course of the film, the narrator for the majority of the movie, Zero Moustafa (played by both Tony Revolori and F. Murray Abraham) reflects on his life as a young lobby boy at the Grand Budapest Hotel who is mentored by Monsieur Gustave, the owner and manager of the building. Written by Jamie Ford, Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet follows the life of Henry Lee, a young Chinese-American boy living in Seattle in the 1940’s during World War II, and his reflections on his youth later, in the 1980’s. The novel illustrates the theme that loyalty is important in times of hardship. Henry deals with both loyalty and the absence of it as he copes with his broken relationship with his father, his forbidden, but strong friendship with a Japanese girl, Keiko, and his awkward connection with his son.

M Gustave is a great man. He makes sure that all of his guest are happy, and he makes sure to take care of all of their needs even if it requires pleasuring sex. In Mr. Gustave’s eager to please attitude, expecting nothing in return. This film is about aging, fathers and sons, male friends, filmmaking and a host of other topics. Anderson gives each of these points their moment to shine, resulting in some insightful and occasionally touching moments from each of these themes. He never feels like he’s bitten off more than he can chew, though, as each subject is touched on and explored the right amount to give it its due. With that being said, Anderson’s particular style did become tiresome in this movie in a way it never did in “The Grand Budapest Hotel.”
We only arrive at the Grand Budapest Hotel after passing through layers upon layers of story within story— a teenage girl in the present day reading a bookˌ the book’s author talking into a camera about the experienced he had while writing his book in the eightiesˌ the younger version of said author meeting a much aged Zero in the now decrepitˌ post-Soviet era Grand Budapest. Thus the new world of our adventure has not been lost to time but rather created by the lost timeˌ through a chain of nostalgic yearnings and imagination. The film diverts its audience's attention away from the dark, grim, realities of then Eastern Europe on the eve of fascism to dwell on just a fun fantasy.
