The Grand Budapest Hotel reenacts the adventures of M. Gustave, a concierge (a caretaker) at a well-known European hotel, and Zero Moustafa, a lobby boy who becomes Gustave’s most trusted friend. The story is about a theft and recovery of the famous Renaissance painting and the battle of a huge family fortune set against a changing backdrop over 30 years and two world wars. This movie was filled with historical references and knowing the History of Western Civilization did help me better understand the movie. References to Eastern Europe’s past and present were evident throughout the film.
