I have been fortunate enough to read the wonderful story of The Giver by Lois Lowry. I found this novel very interesting and eye-opening from the minute I picked it up. The story began in a place where Jonas and his friends and family live. It is the community of Sameness where scientists have worked to control and maintain a world where everything is in perfect order and nothing is unexpected. Jonas' family, like all other families in the community, includes a caring mother and father and two children. Jonas' mother works for the Department of Justice, and his father has a job as a Nurturer, taking care of newborns. Jonas has one seven-year-old sister, Lily, and two good friends; Asher and Fiona. Jonas’ assignment announcement was skipped but was later revealed that he has been selected to be the honored position of Receiver of Memory who advises the Elders by recalling experiences from memories of the past that only the Receiver keeps. Jonas was selected because he is intelligent, courageous, wise and has the abilities to “see beyond” and cope with physical pain. His rules are that he cannot take any pain medication, apply for release or talk about his training, but he can lie and ask anyone about anything; even if it’s ride. In an attempt to save Gabriel and the rest of the community, Jonas takes Gabe and a supply of food across to Elsewhere. They ride for days and days, fighting difficult terrain, uncontrollable weather and a shortage of food. They are also faced with danger of being caught when planes form the community search for them. Fortunately, they are able to hide and catch some food to eat. Jonas comforts Gabe with memories of happiness and sunshine to keep them going. It has been weeks now and they are both exhausted until it starts snowing and they come across a familiar looking hill. They hike up to the top of the hill where they find the sled from Jonas’ first memory from the Giver. They experience an inspiring downhill ride on the sled and find a family in their home at Christmas waiting to greet them, hopefully releasing the memories to the Giver and everyone else back in the
