Thinking about a nice warm and comforting vacation to Florida this winter? Unfortunately, that’s not going to happen, at least not anytime soon. Recently, the East Coast, all the way from Florida to Maine, was “bombed” by a cyclone. This crazy storm has made a tremendous effect on the people of the east coast. Whether it’s airports shutting down, homeless people facing the piercing cold, or the wildlife dealing with unusual and brutal weather. It was just new years and people all over America are traveling to get back home. Disastrously, the winter storm has affected various airports by delaying and even canceling them. Not only are airports losing money, but also people not being able to find a way home. Travel has now become a struggle in major cities such as Washington D.C., Baltimore, and Philadelphia. As many people know, there are countless homeless people around larger cities, and they have nowhere to hide from this terrifying storm. Many groups such as “The Red Cross”, have been helping many homeless people get away from the storm by taking them into shelters and getting them warm clothes. This shows that the winter storm was more than a surprise to everyone because homeless people aren’t used to freezing weather. Isaac’s Storm, by Erik Larson was a very fascinating book because it is difficult to say absolutely what the true subject of the book is. There are three key players in the book, first it is Isaac Cline a meteorologist for the U.S Weather Bureau, The U.S. Weather Bureau itself, and finally the storm of 1900. However, all three elements collaborate with one another in a significant way. The storm of 1900 is the main catalyst for one of the most devastating storms in the United States. It’s not always the tumbleweed towns that are portrayed on tv. While driving down Main Street you can see many homeless men and women from our own community. These people have very little with them, some have a backpack others have a cart that they keep their belongings in but not very many have coats and even less have warm coats that will last them through the winter. Weatherford has halfway homes and help centers for these men, women and sometimes children but many people are to prideful to go into them. In 2014 there were 19,177 homeless people in Texas, which means about 7 out of every 10,000 don’t have a place to live. Early this February the states surrounding the great lakes in the northeast were pounded by lake-effect snow storms. Some areas saw more than four feet of snow. These states are accustomed to lake-effect snow storms, but it has been some time since they last saw one of this magnitude. Some areas saw up to 140 inches in less than twelve days. Hurricane Katrina was considered as the worst hurricane in the history of United States. The winds and the rain were shattering people’s homes which collapsed and flooded. Thousands of people were suffering and dying. People were starving, and becoming dehydrated. Many people were left on the street and became homeless. After the hurricane, so many questions were left regarding the widespread damage and loss of loved ones. This devastating disaster destroyed the city of New Orleans and nearby cities and was estimated to cost $80 billion dollars in damage. State and local emergency in the affected area were struggling to perform urgent response missions such as emergency medical services, search and rescue, firefighting, giving food and water,
Leading up to this storm, many prominent scientists believed that the hurricane would never make landfall, or if it did hit, would not cause any major damage. Due to this foolhardy belief held by the scientists, many civilians did not have any time to evacuate their homes and barely escaped with their loved ones and whatever small valuables or keepsakes they could grab. Regretfully, many families had to leave everything they had behind. Hurricane Andrew also damaged the livelihood of many small shop owners or farms and caused long term problems as well. Due to the large flooding and high wind speeds, much of southern Florida was left in ruin and many years were spent trying to clean the rubble and restore buildings. Hurricane Katrina left a devastating scar on the citizens of the southern coast of the U.S., especially New Orleans, Louisiana. The category 5 hurricane was the costliest natural disaster, as well as one of the most deadly. Katrina hit New Orleans on August 29th, 2005 and after that day, 66,000 people were displaced from their homes. Of those who decided to ride out the storm with hopes of success and survival as they had experienced with other storms, they were found on their rooftops, in their attics, hoping for boat or helicopter rescue, relying on others for help to survive. The storm had reached 28,000 square feet inward to Louisiana, which was 60 percent of the state. 1,100 Louisianans lost their lives, and 200,000 were displaced and/or lost their homes (Davis 8). It was a devastating time of despair and suffering. People were put through experiences that would scar them for a long time. While preparing for evacuation, people left most of their belongings at home to flee to a safer city or to find shelter in the Superdome and Convention Center. Some even decided to remain in their boarded up homes. After the hurricane had past, a few hours went by and a levee located near the Mississippi River canal broke leaving New Orleans flooded (Delisi). After the disaster, the state and federal governments were pointing fingers at each other as to who was to blame for the poorly planned evacuation and rescue efforts for the victims. Hypothermia is a cause for concern when temperatures are in the 32 degrees to 50 degrees range. Since winter shelters are only available once temperatures drop way under, those without homes have to suffer in the cold winter weather. This shows how homeless people must be strong enough to endure the harsh weather and only those with stronger immune systems will be able to survive. The cold winter weather affects everyone and only the fittest survive. “While some called her a thorn in their side, others called her their friend and a ‘special soul.’ At the end of December, she died from exposure on a bench outside of a coffee shop,” (Lives of the Homeless). The harsh conditions made it hard for this lady to survive. She, like many others, had a life and a story to tell but the weather was unsuitable to be homeless in. Technology was a lacking factor on that January 12th day of 1888, which did not give those people warning on what was coming their way. Forecasters that were subject to human error did not have access to information that could have been provided by the Army. Certain weather terminology was forbidding to use for the fear that some cities were immune to these storms. During that day of the blizzard there were no advanced warning signs (outside of the temperature dropping) that the worst blizzard was about to occur, technology had not yet reached that point. If on that day or any day, the Army would have made weather a top priority some of those children could have been saved or at home with their families instead of dying alone in the snow. Forecasters could only get weather information the day of or twenty-four hours before. A few days ago, Haiti was hit by a gruesome tropical storm which soon turned into a category five hurricane, known as Hurricane Matthew. The towns, Jeremie and the Sud Province were the worse hit by the deadly hurricane. BBC News reported, “in Jeremie 80 percent of the towns buildings were leveled, while the Sud Province estimated a total of 30 thousand homes that were damaged or demolished by Hurricane Matthew” (“Hurricane Matthew” n.p.). Many families are trying to rebuild their homes from the ground up salvaging what can be saved, but the mayhem of the deadly storm leaves them nearly with nothing. At the Superdome in New Orleans, where supplies had been limited to begin with, officials accepted 15,000 more refugees from the storm on Monday before locking the doors. City leaders had no real plan for anyone else. Tens of thousands of people desperate for food, water and shelter broke into the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center complex, but they found nothing there but chaos. Meanwhile, it was nearly impossible to leave New Orleans: Poor people especially, without cars or anyplace else to go, were stuck. Governor Kathleen Blanco did not called for the National Guard for days to come.
Lois M. Collins, Desert News, is also a good strategy for addressing the problem of the homelessness in Tempe. However, it is not as effective as the National Coalition for the Homeless (2006). The former strategy encourages people to donate the excess part of what they own, including food, tools, and water, to needy and homeless individuals (McNamara, 2008). The problem with the strategy is that it does not have the power to mobilize people to donate their belongings to the homeless, as most people wish to keep what they have in excess for future needs and unforeseen eventualities.
Every year many natural disasters happen around the world. In New Orleans, and several other states, a devastating hurricane struck. High speed winds and major flooding caused many people to lose their homes and even their lives. Many people have heard of hurricane Katrina, but not everybody knows what caused it and the affect it had on the United States.
Snow Storm Baby The year was 1992; a cold December arctic wind had brought a chance of snow to the area. It was the weekend and time to relax after a long, hard week at work. The weather service had predicted several inches of snow to blanket the region by the next day. Not to worry: it was the weekend and traveling was not a necessity.
Florida has to contend with the costliest natural disaster in U.S. history. Hurricane Andrew swept through southern Florida in August 1992, just south of Miami, leaving 41 people dead, making more than 200,000 homeless, and doing about $20 billion worth of property damage. In August 1995 Hurricane Erin crossed Florida along the same path, then turned and swept through the panhandle, causing an estimated $360 million in damage. The panhandle was pounded again later in 1995 by Hurricane Opal, which caused damage of $2.1 billion. A series of tornadoes hit the central part of the state in February 1998, claiming 42 lives. That is just one case in particular. All over the world the same story happens over and over. What is so sad is that in the 3rd world countries, there is little to no protection and many more lives are lost. Such as in 1998, Hurricane Mitch devastated Honduras, killing between 5,600 and 7,000 people. It also swept away 70 percent of their crops and cost billions of dollars to put the nation back together.
Hurricanes occur all over the world, at different times, but commonly through June first and late November. However in late August 2005 a catastrophic hurricane struck. This was Hurricane Katrina. With winds traveling over one hundred miles per hour making it a category five on the Saffir- Simpson Hurricane Scale it was said to have cause billions of dollars’ worth of damage. Hurricane Katrina flooded nearly forty thousand homes, and killed at least two thousand people (“Hurricane”). An average category five hurricane has enough energy to power street lamps for more than twenty seven thousand hours (Williams 58). Knowing about Hurricane Katrina, and the devastation of the city in New Orleans would be beneficial. Also, general information on hurricanes can help civilians and people of higher authority better understand and prepare for damage that could once hit their town and community. Because experts know the general information on these storms they can help explain to the public why and how Hurricane Katrina and other hurricanes occur. Hopefully, in the future civilians will know and use this information to their advantage against hurricanes.
