Changes will come and go in the world, but family will be steadfast. There are many things that change throughout People of the Book, but family is a constant. No matter what part of the book you are reading it will most likely tie in with family somehow, whether it is positive or negative. The three families that have the most influence on the reader during the book are Ozren and Alia, Isak and Ina, and Lola and the Kamals. Both members of this family influence each other. They have a huge impact on each other and would not be able to survive without each other, which is shown in the book. The bond between the two is very strong. This is shown whenever Ina makes Lola taker her to Izak. She was not supposed to find him, but her will was strong enough to find a way to be with him. Even whenever Ina is dying and Izaks foot his frozen he would not give up on her. Izak tried his hardest to save Ina and when he realized that he could not he died along with her the way they both would have wanted. So, even in death they were inseparable. These characters are molded by each other because they live for one another and are extremely close. This family has the most influence on the character out of any of the other families. The heart that the Kamals had is unbelievable. Lola is basically an orphan after her family was taken by the Nazis and the Kamals did everything they could to help her out. This shows that there was still good in some families in society during such a bad period. The impact that the Kamals had on Lola is unrivaled. They rescued her from the streets and saved her from death. Lola is also changed or molded a lot by her family. Whenever the Kamals take her in she starts doing things that she did not do before. She was not very religious, but listens and watches the Kamal’s religious acts. She also learns a lot from the Kamals. Lola was already a good person, but she is able to stay how she was and learn new things along the way with her family. Lola’s family has a very positive force on her and gets her back on her
The Nolan family consists of four strong hearted people. The Nolan's are very unique for a family who lives in the slums of Brooklyn; they are a pretty decent family of four. Kate is the beautiful young mother of Francie and Neeley and the wife of Johnny. Kate holds a janitress job to keep her family together and from starving, she is basically the sole provider for the family. Johnny, Kate's drunk husband, is considered to be a good man, but he is nothing but a drunk who, has an off and on again job as a free lance singer/waiter. Their daughter, Francie, who is the main character of the book, is a very intelligent young woman. Francie always wants to do the best in everything that she tries. Last but not least is the youngest Nolan, Neeley. He is Francie's younger brother. He is also loved the most by his mamma. Neeley is Katies Favorite and this is quite obvious. The Nolan's are unique. They have hope that life will get better.
Paine, Noah’s father, is in jail and that puts more pressure on Noah’s mom because she truly cares about Noah and Abbey. Noah’s mom has to play the roles of both mom and dad because she is the only adult in the house and needs to take care of Noah and Abbey since Paine is in jail. The following quote by Noah proves that his mom is stressed, “My mother says that being married to my father is like having another child to watch after, one who’s too big and unpredictable to put in time-out.” This quote shows how family is helping you get through tough times because because Donna, Noah’s mom, knows she has Noah’s support and his listening ear.

But to Holden Caulfield, the main character of J.D. Salinger’s novel The Catcher In The Rye, his family was what we as a society normally think of when that word is spoken. There are always variations on a theme, but a typical family consists of two parents and at least one child. During the 1950’s when the novel is set, adoption was virtually unheard of and divorce could be considered a sin where as today these are common practices. But one thing about family that has prevailed through the decades is the family’s affect on a person’s existence. The way a person interacts with their family can affect them for the rest of their lives. And the way a family interacts with a specific person can affect that person for the rest of their life. It is a two way relationship which is often complicated and confusing, especially to Holden.

The mother and daughters' names each bears its individual meaning, but all these names are indeed "intertwined" into a deeper relationship among each other.
