The story Flush written by Carl Hiaasen has many themes. I focused on what I thought was the most important theme. I focused on family because they help you get through tough times, to support the family theme my three topics are Noah’s father is in jail, be there for your family, and lastly operation Royal Flush.
Paine, Noah’s father, is in jail and that puts more pressure on Noah’s mom because she truly cares about Noah and Abbey. Noah’s mom has to play the roles of both mom and dad because she is the only adult in the house and needs to take care of Noah and Abbey since Paine is in jail. The following quote by Noah proves that his mom is stressed, “My mother says that being married to my father is like having another child to watch after, one who’s too big and unpredictable to put in time-out.” This quote shows how family is helping you get through tough times because because Donna, Noah’s mom, knows she has Noah’s support and his listening ear.
My next claim is about being there for your family. Abbey overheard her mom talking to grandma Janet about a divorce. Noah and Abbey desperately did not want their parents to get a divorce. Noah’s mom then explained in a quiet and calm voice that she

The three claims all related to the theme family. The three claims were, Noah's father is in jail, be there for you family, and operation Royal Flush. Noah’s mom really has to be there for Noah and Abbey. Being there for your family relates to family because Noah's mom was thinking about getting a divorce but then she explained how she would never leave Noah and Abbey. Lastly operation Royal Flush relates to family because Noah and Abbey wanted to nail Dusty so bad that they got on the Coral Queen and flushed dye down the toilet. This proves to their dad that they really do care about him by setting up a plan to nail Dusty
Jeannette and her siblings were all forced into completing tasks and taking on roles for themselves and their other siblings that are heartbreaking to read about and uncommon for most children to experience and tackle themselves. Much of this had to do with the lack of responsibility on their parents’ part and the ways they decided to live. As I have read the book, I have been amazed over and over again at the ways Jeannette handled the parental roles—both mother and father. She was very tough and never gave up, but you could tell there were other times she was just plain discouraged. One example we can see her using the roles to benefit her siblings was when her mom left to Charleston to “renew her teaching certificate” for 8 weeks and put Jeannette in charge of the money. Family relationships assist me because they help me focus on my family rather than the tragic event that happened. The effect a family has on one another during a time of difficulty is very strong. One might have a mother, a father, and also brothers, sisters, grandparents, etc. These are the people that one will draw closer to in times of need. Besides their spouse, one’s relationship with their mother is the closest relationship one will have with another human being.. For six weeks, Lorri is alone on an island with the two deceased passengers, Josie Archer and Clarence Fuller, and all that she longs for is the accompaniment of her mother. Her only will to live is so that she could be with her mother again since she has not been able to see her for years before because of World War II. In Wick 's book, Every Storm, she says, “ 'Mother, Mother,’ Lorri sobbed, not able to get close enough,” (Wick 93). When one does not have a mother figure, they lose that maternal bond. The relationship between a mother and child is strong because no one will be able to replace ones real mother. The first theme is that of white supremacy. The Native American is seen as a child like race to be taken advantage of. This is seen in the chapter concerning the Fourth of July celebration. The Indians as well as the half-bloods are portrayed as second class citizens. The Kootenai tribe is described as gamblers and servants to the white men. The Kootenai’s were always playing three card Monte and were known cheaters and drunks. The ranch hands at the H-B were always losing their money while gambling and were victims of the bootlegger. The second theme is closely related to the first and is extremely important. For it’s the first attempt by a Native American to tell their side of the assimilation polices and how these policies created a society that left no place for the Native American to enter or to succeed. The discrimination faced by the Native American is portrayed in chapter 6. In this chapter the Fourth of July celebration is held. During this celebration two horse races are to be run one the ladies race the second the squaw race. Cogewea enters both races during the ladies race she is insulted by her white competitor and told this race is for ladies next she is disqualified for striking her white competitor despite the fact that the white lady hit her first because the judge believed that the half-blood Cogewea was guilty only because she was a half blood. In the squaw race Cogewea is insulted by a full-blood because she is a hated half-blood whose father was white. Cogewea wins the squaw race but when she asks for the total of forty-five dollars the judge chastises her and tells her she is only due the amount of twenty-five dollars for winning the squaw’s race. When Cogewea continues to demand the full prize money an argument breaks out Jim the foreman of the H-B ranch comes to Cogewea’s defense and is nearly put in irons and sentenced to several months in jail before Cogewea is
The short story "Harrison Bergeron" by Kurt Vonnegut epitomizes what solid convictions can make people do and where this, thusly, can lead society to. The inventors of this general public firmly trust that the fundamental driver of friction is contrast among individuals. This solid conviction makes them take great measures to make everybody in the general public equivalent. As indicated by them, a definitive perfect world is the place each individual is equivalent. The majority of families were once considered perfect. The father went to work everyday, while the mother stayed at home and cared for her two children, “Henry” and “Sue”. The children never fought and the parents were involved in all the community events. Our society has grown to accept that there is no such thing as a perfect family. Eleven-year-old Ellen from the book Ellen Foster, by Kaye Gibbons, grows up in a household where her father is an abusive alcoholic and her mother is too sick to complete everyday tasks. By using her positive assets, and learning from her negative assets, Ellen was able to overcome a lot of challenges throughout the book.
The play “A Raisin in the Sun” by Lorraine Hansberry has many interesting characters. In my opinion, the most fascinating character is Ruth because of her many emotions and captivating personality. She goes through extreme emotions in the play such as happiness, sadness, anger, stress, and confusion. Ruth is very independent, firm, kind, witty, and loving.

Furthermore, losing her father and older brother means that Najmah had to do most of the chores outside of the house leaving her mom all by herself. Najmah and Mada-Jan were keeping the farm and home up and running, even with the birth of Najmah's new baby brother, until, “My mother lies on the ground nearby with her legs splayed at odd angles to the rest of her. She reaches her hand toward me, and opens her lips to speak. Instead of words, blood pours from her mouth. By the time I reach her she stares with glassy, dead eyes”(67). Jeannette's mother let her children roam free and protect themselves against the dangers of the world. “fussing over children who cry only encourages them, ….. its positive reinforcement for bad behavior” pg.17. This caused Jeannette at age 3, to fall into fire and go to the hospital for months. Jeannette's mother didn’t want to have to deal with her children and told them to figure things out for themselves. This selfish act done by her mother forced her children to grow up faster. Therefore Jeannette resented her parents and wanted to make a better life for not only herself but her future children. This pushed her to succeed in life, yet without her negative relationships with her parents she might have not been able to do great things in her
Fulfilling the roles of both mother and breadwinner creates an assortment of reactions for the narrator. The Hebrew flood myth tells of a man named Noah, who is selected, along with his family, to survive an epic flood. The flood must occur to cleanse the world of its impurities (Leeming, 47-53). The “flood” in Mabel’s own life involves the many things she loses: her mother, her family’s money, her idea of the future. However, these losses allow her to become a stronger person, to move away from merely being a daughter or a sister and become Mabel (Lawrence, 1-15).

In the story this young mother is pictured as a careless and weak woman who barely pays attention to her children and the people who take most part of the mother’s responsibility is everybody else in the house. In the story the two boys realize that their mother is different from other mothers because she does not act like the rest of their friend’s mothers who care about their children. The problem keeps escalating because the mother’s parents keep putting pressure on her so that she can dedicate more time to her children. I noticed that things were a little different when she invited her boyfriend to the house to have dinner with her children, a true family moment in my opinion if you ask me. At this point I come to the realization that she wants to have a family like she once did. The young mother then enters a great depression after Max and her end the relationship and that drives her to take her life
