THE DARK ROMANTICISM ELEMENTS IN “THE FALL OF THE HOUSE OF USHER”.
“The fall of the house of Usher” was written by Edgar Allan Poe in 1839. It is one of the most recognize Poe’s short stories. Poe is one of one of the most famous writers of the history, his work was different and innovative compared to other authors of his time. In this story we face a fantastic narration about revenge and the death of the soul. The short story has lots of dark romanticism elements such as incestuous relationships and unknown places. Therefore, the purpose of this essay is to analyze and demonstrate that in this short story, Edgar Allan Poe uses many elements representatives of the Dark Romanticism.

There is no passage in which the narrator affirms where the story is situated. The first words of the story try to framing the stage frames of the work, but do so in a way that does not know exactly where the character is located but the reader can only know the feeling of darkness and nostalgia that feels there: “During the whole of a dull, dark, and soundless day in the autumn of the year, when the clouds hung oppressively low in the heavens, I had been passing alone, on horseback, through a singularly dreary tract of country”. Poe uses the paintings of the artist John Henry Fuseli to describe the landscape. Lynne P. Shackelford states that Poe uses the images of water, mist, sleep and descent as verbal clues of the subconscious. “Shaking off from my spirit what must have been a dream…” Moreover, Poe mentions Fuseli’s paintings in “The Fall of the House of Usher”, when the narrator talks about Roderick’s paintings. This makes clear the relation between Fuseli’s paintings and the imagery that Poe uses, which gives a sense of harmony since it causes this painter to be part of the work both from inside and outside.
