In 1803 the Louisiana purchase took place, which cost the United States 15 million dollars this included the land west of the Mississippi. The Louisiana purchase doubled the size of the Unites states. Almost 7 million Americans headed west in search for securing land and the hope of being wealthy. All together tripping the size of the United States. the westward expansion greatly affected the Native Americans. The government repeatedly relocated the native Americans eventually forcing them to live in reservations. In the 1830's the Plains Indians were sent to the Great American Deserts in the west because the white men did not think they deserved the land. Afterwards, they were able to live peacefully, and to follow their traditions and customs, but when the white men found out the land they were on were still good for agricultural, or even for railroad land they took it back. Thus, the white man movement westward quickly begun. This prospect to expand westward caused the government to become thoroughly involved in the lives of the Plains Indians. These intrusions by the white men had caused spoilage of the Plains Indians buffalo hunting styles, damaged their social and cultural lives, and hurt their overall lives. The lives of the Plains Indians in the second half of the nineteenth century were greatly affected by the technological development and government actions.
The Indian Removal Act and the Louisiana Purchase was a very important time in the U.S. History and many years to come. In the late 1700s and early 1800s, two major events took place that were turning points for the U.S., The Louisiana Purchase and the Indian Removal Act, these events made an impact socially, economically, and politically. First of all, the United States was out in search of rich soil to plant many fields of cotton. During this search in 1785, they became upon Native Americans who occupied millions of untouched land. In the early 1800s, nearly 125,000 Native Americans disappeared; by the end of the decade, very few Natives remained.
The time of westward expansion was filled of hardships and challenges for the citizens of America. They left their homes at their own will to help make life better for themselves, and would letter recognize how they helped our country expand. The people of the Oregon trail risked their lives to help better their lives and expand and improve the country of America. However, no reward comes without work, and the emigrants of the Oregon Trail definitely had it cut out for them. They faced challenges tougher than anyone elses during the time of westward expansion.The Emigrants of the Oregon trail had the the most difficult time surviving and thriving in the west because of environmental difficulties, illness abundance, and accident occurrence.
It was thought that God had a plan for Whites to move across both coasts and start the New World. The Manifest Destiny was a progressive movement starting in the 1840's. John O'Sullivan, a democratic leader, named the movement in 1845. Manifest Destiny meant that westward expansion was America's destiny. The land that was added to the U.S. after 1840 (the start of Manifest Destiny) includes The Texas Annexation (1845), The Oregon Country (1846), The Mexican Cession (1848), The Gadsden Purchase (1853), Alaska (1867), and Hawaii (1898). Although this movement would take several years to accomplish fully, things started changing before we knew it. New technology took off right away!
Without the Westward Movement, where would the United States be today? It’d be much further behind other countries and not the power house it currently is. The pioneers were trailblazers. The Effects of Colonization on the Native Americans Native Americans had inherited the land now called America and eventually their lives were destroyed due to European colonization. When the Europeans arrived and settled, they changed the Native American way of life for the worse. These changes were caused by a number of factors including disease, loss of land, attempts to export religion, and laws, which violated Native American culture. Native Americans never came in contact with diseases that developed in the Old World because they were separated from Asia, Africa, and Europe when ocean levels rose following the end of the last Ice Age. Diseases like smallpox, measles, pneumonia, influenza, and malaria were unknown to the Native Americans until the Europeans brought these diseases over time to them.
Western expansion in the United States caused many Native Americans to be evacuated from their lands and onto Federal government-owned reserves. The United States expanded when Thomas Jefferson made the Louisiana Purchase. Another factor was the Homestead Act. The Homestead Act motivated people to move west. This was at a time when Americans would get 160 acres of free land just for moving to the west, which most used for farming. These were the two main factors that drove westward expansion and made Americans excited about the opportunities that they could have. This motivating factor lead to some terrible outcomes. One of which is that the Native Americans were removed from their tribal lands and moved to designated lands called reserves

Westward expansion had a smaller impact on social life. One of the ways westward expansion impacted social life is how they treated natives and their property. The Native’s living conditions were described by a quote from Santana who was the chief of the kiowas, “A long time ago this land belonged to our fathers; but when i go up to the river i see camps of soldiers here on its bank. These soldiers cut down my timber… my heart feels like [sic] bursting; I feel sorry.” (Santana) The Inhumane treatment was justified by Andrew Jackson as “Putting an end to all possible danger of collision” (Jackson). This was not the biggest impact of westward expansion however.
At the time Andrew Jackson was president, there was a fast growing population and a desire for more land. Because of this, expansion was inevitable. To the west, many native Indian tribes were settled. Andrew Jackson spent a good deal of his presidency dealing with the removal of the Indians in western land. Throughout the 1800’s, westward expansion harmed the natives, was an invasion of their land, which led to war and tension between the natives and America, specifically the Cherokee Nation.
