The idea of literacy is not only that a person can read and write but the way in which they do so. To be literate is to be able to eloquently and accurately express ideas, solve problems and show knowledge about a particular subject (Bond, V., 2011). The concept of literacy training for children and adolescents in school is important because it is through literacy that the desire to learn and become educated is grown. Examples will be given of different forms of literacy training and the elements that make each one successful.

There is a correlation between having strong language capabilities and success in literacy training (Mayer, 2017). The study, effect of family supported pre-reading training program given to children in preschool education period on reading success in primary school (2012), identified four principles that are important for literacy and retention. One, early intervention, two, literacy is impacted by the environment. Three, early literacy is a measure of future reading skills and four, one of the earliest skills that should be mastered to ensure literacy is phonological awareness. The methods of the programs all included designs to encourage the participating children and provide a sense of achievement (Randall, Tyldsley, 2016). All the studies also showed that there was a continuous effect of these programs after six months post-intervention. In order for a memory training literacy program to be effective the program needs to be adaptive; where the level of difficulty is altered to meet each individual child’s level and keep the program challenging.
