The Crucible Essay: Prompt #1 The Idea that negative events affect your brain more dramatically can be seen in the short story The Crucible by Author Miller,.Another way your brain deals with negative events is to protect your reputation for fear of uncertain consequences. In this story two characters I’m using that are concerned with their reputations are Abigail and John Proctor. John is a tormented individual he believes his affair with Abigail damaged him in the eyes of god and he had a wife named Elizabeth and he wanted to commit adultery. Abigail was a maid at the proctors household and had an affair with John. Their situations are different because Abigail still likes John but, he wants nothing to do with her. She seduces him and he feels guilty. He had to confess his sins to the court and to Elizabeth that he was sorry for his actions. He admits the truth, even though Abigail wants him to lie but, John is a good person because his reputation is at risk with Elizabeth. Proctor protects his wife from him dying because him escaping of death wouldn’t be good for his reputation. I see him as a hardworking person and a nice person. Elizabeth Proctor is a good woman she is married to John. who is having affair with the maid. Elizabeth fires Abigail and after that happens Abigail starts to do witchcraft on Elizabeth making her sick and almost dying. She is a woman of the church and his reputation is a risk when the city finds out about the affair, Elizabeth blames herself, which isn’t fair because it’s not her fault, of what they did. she decides to let John go because he cheated on her and she doesn’t trust him anymore at the end of the story John saves her and they killed him.
