In today’s world, humor is portrayed through many different outlets of society. Whether it be on the radio, in person during stand up, or on television, comedy is an easy way to lighten the mood and make easy conversation out of controversial topics. Comedy in television is a crucial role in the everyday community when it comes to not only discussing debatable topics, but diffusing them as well. Television uses humor through many different ways including jokes, skits, and embarrassing occasions. In numerous different shows like Family Guy and Weeds, the producers use humor to address problems in society. With this, humor as well as the portrayal of single parent families has changed throughout the years. Before the later 1960’s, all television families were visualized as “perfect” families, then with the introduction of the show The Brady Bunch, this began a change in modern day television. The producers of this show had to figure out a way to draw the attention of a new audience, therefore with the implementation of an alternative lifestyle, they were able to bring in enough revenue to continue the show. In the article, “Effects of Humor on Persuasion”, Dorothy Markiewicz conducted a study and found that, “[within these] studies [they] report no significant differences between humorous and serious messages, but two suggests that humorous messages are more interesting than comparable serious ones” (413).Therefore, being that humorous message are more interesting, Markiewicz found that “when adding humor to the dull message [it] produced favorable interest ratings, as well as source rating” (413). From this research, it gives the readers and viewers an understanding of how television programs use humor to lighten up any situation—single parent families—and helps the viewers obtain an idea towards the significance of it. In the television show, Weeds, both the parent and the children are shown negatively throughout the whole series. However, although being depicted in a negative manner the producers of this show were able to interlace humor with this to keep the balance. The mom, Nancy Bloom, becomes a single mother from the unexpected death of her husband, Judah. Two out of her three children who are older, deal with Judah’s death in their own difficult and irresponsible ways. The eldest, Silas, took out his emotions on everyone and started being involved with drugs. The second child, Shane, expresses his emotion in bizarre ways such as talking to his dead father throughout some of the seasons. Showing these characters in comedic ways puts into prospective the type of situation that viewers hope would not happen to their own lives. Parents that view the show will take into account the actions that Nancy Bloom does and how she steadily is a bad influence towards her children and this as well could steer these parents into the right direction with their own children. In season 6 episode 4 “Bliss”, Shane stated “You’re not a bad influence because you’re a drug dealer. You’re a bad influence because you’re a bad drug dealer”. This statement shows that Shane knows that his mother is a bad influence, so with his play on words he was able to turn a very serious situation into a
