The Courageous Events in To Kill A Mockingbird
In To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee, Atticus, the father of Jem and Jean Louise (Scout) Finch, always gave his children good advice and encouraging words. Atticus, along with many other characters in the book, was very courageous. There are many courageous events throughout the story that helps keep the reader’s attention. Some of the courageous actions in the book was Scout standing up to Miss Caroline for Walter Cunningham, the towns people helping Ms. Maudie during the fire, the acceptance of Tom Robinson’s case and the heroic actions of Mr. Arthur (Boo) Radley.
It was Scout’s first day of school and it was starting out rough. She had been told that she could not read properly and that she needed to stop reading with Atticus. She was miserable and did not want to be involved with school anymore. One day, a little boy named Walter Cunningham did not have his lunch money. The Cunningham’s are very poor and would not take anything that they could not pay back. Miss Caroline, a new teacher in town, had offered Walter a quarter for his lunch but he would not take it. Miss Caroline kept trying to convince Walter to take the quarter but he refused to. You could see the embarrassment on poor Walter Cunningham’s face. Finally, Scout stood up out of her chair and said, “Miss Caroline, he’s a Cunningham” (20). Scout thought she had made it pretty clear why Walter would not take the quarter. Unfortunately, Miss Caroline was so new in town that she had no idea who the Cunninghams were, forcing Scout to go into more detail with her explanation, “That’s okay, ma’am, you’ll get to know all the county folks after a while. The Cunninghams never took anything they can’t pay back-no church ...

Harper Lee's novel To Kill a Mockingbird was published in the year of 1960, and is one of the few American classic novels awarded the Pulitzer Prize. The racism that is prevalent in many southern American towns in the 1930s is brought to life with profound imagery in To Kill a Mockingbird. There are several characters in the book, yet the true main character is the narrator's father, Atticus Finch. He is a man of great integrity and intelligence. A very heroic figure in more ways than one, Atticus possesses traits like being principled, determined, and, more importantly, he teaches others. When looking at To Kill a Mockingbird, one can see that Lee uses lots of description, dialogue, and actions to portray Atticus as a heroic individual.
An idea that recurs in or pervades a work of art of literature can be referred to as a “Theme”. Themes often explore timeless and universal ideas and may be implied rather than stated explicitly. Theme is an important part of fictional stories. Several themes are presented in the novel to kill a mocking bird. One of the reoccurring themes in to kill a mockingbird is courage.

Why is it important to have moral values? To know what’s right in a situation? To put the well being of others before yourself? For most people in the small fictional town of Maycomb, Alabama, values and fairness are not important. The Maycomb townspeople only follow the social norms based on racism, and their decisions are influenced by these norms. However a certain few in the town do have moral values and look to do the right thing when faced with a tough decision. In the award winning novel To Kill a Mockingbird, by Harper Lee, true understanding of courage and empathy lead Jem and Scout closer to maturity.
"Courage isn't an absence of fear. It's doing what you are afraid to do. It's having the power to let go of the familiar and forge ahead into new territory." ~John Maxwell. In To Kill a Mockingbird, Scout (Jean Louise Finch), Jem (Jeremy Atticus Finch), and Atticus Finch display acts of valor that contribute, and in some cases encourage their rectitude. Harper Lee demonstrates that acting courageously can lead to an improved, sustained, or newly developed personal integrity.
As Martin Luther King Jr. quotes in A Testament of Hope: The Essential Writings and Speeches “Darkness cannot drive out darkness: only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate: only love can do that” (qtd.in. Goodreads.com). Atticus’ words of wisdom for the duration of To Kill a Mockingbird are used as a guiding light for not only his children, but the nation as a whole during the Civil Rights Movement. Through the 1950’s and 60’s African-Americans all over the U.S. were fighting to end Jim Crow Laws. Their movement inspired many and was what also influenced by Harper Lee’s to write her first literary work. In To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, Lee uses the character Atticus Finch as a moral compass to show that true courage comes from
Atticus Finch was a true hero, in my eyes. He had all the essentials to being a hero, such as; respect, equality, and quiet dignity. Sure, Mr. Finch didn’t quite reach his goal of winning the Tom Robinson case, but it was the fact that he attempted it, knowing he would lose. A hero is not someone who achieves something, but is a person that attempts to. The journey to your goal might even be more important than the actual achievement, because on your way to the top, struggles appear and you overcome them by learning new lessons to live by in life. In conclusion, Atticus Finch truly is America’s greatest hero.
Courage is the thing which can be found in a child to an old man. It needs a lot of courage to take out courage from the heart. It is like a brain. It depends on the person, how and when he uses it. This tiny word has the power to convey the whole gesture of a person. According to Harper Lee?s genius ?To Kill a Mockingbird?, Courage is when you know you are licked before you begin but you begin anyway and you see it through it through no matter what.
Boo Radley showed courage by risking his life to save Scout and Jem when they were under attack by Bob Ewell, whilst wielding a knife at night. The reasoning as to why Bob attacked them is that Atticus made Bob look like he was the one who beat his daughter up, even though he really is. Bob was very outraged when this happened causing him to desire revenge on Atticus, but luckily for Atticus, Boo was there to stop Bob. Although Boo showed courage by stopping Bob, he showed courage a second time as well in this scene because Boo risks publicity to save Jem and Scout. He would hate to hear his name spread around town, even for saving two children, because he is shy and does not like attention. After the death of Bob, Sheriff Heck knows that it was Boo who stepped in, saved the children, and killed Bob, but he does not want to announce it publicly for Boo’s sake. “Stunned, I stood there dumbly. The scuffling noises were dying; someone wheezed and the night was still again” (Lee 351). This shows how Boo stepped in and fought off Bob, eventually killing
She had seen Walter Cunningham on the yard and on his way to the same class as Scout. A new teacher Miss Caroline had been their teacher and does not understand her students yet. During lunch, Walter Cunningham was the only one without a lunch and Miss Caroline had offered him a quarter and suddenly Scout had yelled out about Walter, how he is a cunningham and has no money to pay back. Scout attempted to help her but her efforts to help are only rebuke by Miss. Caroline. Miss Caroline yells at Scout, Scout begins to get furious for trying to help and fights with Walter and again Miss Caroline shouts out at Scout. Scout returns home to her father and explains the situation at school to Atticus. Atticus asks Scout to understand the situation from Miss Caroline's point of view, Miss Caroline can't
Throughout To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, I found many characters courageous and admirable. Scout, because she's such a smart and fearless little girl, Jem, because he’s always there to protect Scout and is there to help his father with anything he might need. I also think that Boo was a courageous character because he was willing to do anything he might ever need to do to help the children. The one character that stuck out to me the most was Atticus. I thought he was incredibly courageous and a great father to his children. Many times throughout the story he proved to us that he isn't afraid of losing or being wrong, which I admire a lot.
"It was times like these when I thought my father, who hated guns and had never been to any wars was the bravest man who ever lived” (Lee 134.) Atticus raised his children in a time period where society treated you by the color of your skin and not for who you are. Atticus and his children are full of confidence and bravery during a time of inequality, depression, and racism. Atticus stood up to what he believed in and he was most importantly brave. His daughter Scout had to stand up to all the hatred she was getting for her father's trial. Atticus took many risks knowing that the outcome may not be favorable towards him. In the novel To Kill a Mockingbird , Harper Lee displays that Bravery and Courage are important life traits, and can help
Atticus’s real courage drove him to put aside the criticism and risk, and take up and fight the Tom Robinson’s controversial case. It is evident that these three characters in To Kill a Mockingbird display acts of real courage, even when they know they are fighting a losing battle.
"Courage is when you know you're licked before you begin, but you begin anyway and you see it through no matter what" According to Atticus Finch, an honest lawyer in Harper Lee's novel "To Kill a Mockingbird" courage is not a man with a gun in his hand. "Real courage" is when you fight for what is right regardless of whether you win or lose. Atticus fits into this definition of what "real courage" is and demonstrates it several times throughout the novel.
No matter where or who a person is, they are always learning something, either about themselves or about the environment around them. In Harper Lee's heartwarming novel titled To Kill A Mockingbird, the main characters Jem and Scout grow and mature throughout the story as they learn both more about themselves and the world around them. As the story progresses, they learn many life lessons including those about prejudice, people and how they have been categorized and judged, and, last but not least, gender issues.
