The Contender, is a film about a woman who gets nominated to become the vice president of the United States. Senator Laine Hanson gets the nominee when the incumbent vice president dies in office. Both Democrats and Republicans oppose this nominee. Everyone generally assumes that a man will fill this position and Governor Jack Hathaway stands as the dominate candidate. Jack Hathaway made front headlines while he was on a fishing trip. As a car drove off a bridge, Jack dove into freezing waters trying to save a woman that was trapped inside. Sadly, he was not successful but was declared a hero for attempting to save the woman. Since she is happily married, and has a young child he believes that she is the best candidate for vice president. Conformation committee of chairman, Shelley Runyon exposes Laine Hanson by leaking her information to the press. He discovered that while in college Laine Hanson was involved in multiple sexual incidents. This leads to a vehement controversy, as secrets from her past come back to haunt her. Faced with this controversy, Laine Hanson is risking her political future, as well as her personal life. Laine Hanson does not deny nor confirm these allegations, she tries to change the subject and talk about politics. Since Shelley Runyon believes that Laine Hanson is unqualified, mainly because she is a female, he decides to start spreading rumors about her. Runyon begins saying that Laine Hanson approached these sexual incidents just for money. Turns out that Hathaway had paid a woman to drive her car off the bridge into the lake just to increase his ratings for vice president and become the better candidate.
