The Circle Message

The message in The Circle can be interpreted in many different ways. Some might choose to look at the technological aspect of it and examine how human interaction and technology relate, while others might choose to look at the moral dilemmas the characters in the book face. This paper will look at the bigger picture and examine the overall message and social commentary that I believe the author tried to make. The Circle touched on quite a few subjects, but the ones that really stood out to me is the dangers of technology, the importance of family, and the rights of individuals. There are several points in The Circle that human rights are violated. Two very good examples, I believe, is when Mercer was driven to suicide after Mae's demonstration of the prevalence of social media and how Mae wanted to peer into the mind of her comatose friend, Annie. Shaken by how much power the circle has and their ability to monitor and track him at all times was too much for Mercer, who purposely drove his car off a cliff while being pursued by Circlers. This is a clear violation of his rights because he had no desire to be monitored and the Circlers had no reason to monitor him, besides using him for a demonstration. Regarding Annie's coma, which she fell into due to the stress of finding out terrible things about her family, Mae felt that Annie having private thoughts was unacceptable, and proceeded to find a way to invade her mind and find out what she was thinking. This happens at the very end of the book, so it wasn't made clear if she was successful or even made an attempt at all, but it was heavily implied.
