The Chrysalids, is a cruel, fearsome book, but there are many life-learning messages that John Wyndham, the author, swiftly slips into the text. Some of which are, respecting each other, being brave, and learning to accept yourself for who you are. The main message I think the book is about, is discrimination and prejudice. These are two very powerful, and strong topics that I think the author was trying to make a clear point about; to make a change in the society we live in today.
The Chrysalids, is a book where different people are hated and signified as evil. This is because they look odd or are different from the Norms. Saying this, the author is trying to have the readers to infer that it doesn’t matter how people look or are. These are two very short words, but they can lead you a long way, especially when you are being discriminated by the way you look or think. “I think she’s awfully brave too. It must have hurt a lot.” said David, about Sophie. “Will you keep a secret-an important secret- for her sake?” Ms. Wender asked David. “Yes- of course.” David agreed. This conversation shows how brave Sophie is, to hide such a great secret, and suffer not being able to go to school. It also expresses David’s respectful nature and thoughts for Sophie and her family. Being respectful to someone and being brave can help boost confidence, self esteem and hope very largely. The Wenders’ family gained belief that they can get through it, as they knew that they could trust David for support.
In The Chrysalids, prejudice and discrimination is related with many of the main events by showing different aspects of each. It shows ways for the victims to overcome their fears and worries. This is why I think the main message is about discrimination and
