I am not a professor of ethics or professional responsibility. Nor am I an "expert" Schooled in the finer points of theoretical professionalism. I am just a college student. So what warrant do I have to write about and to speak about "professionalism”? I leave this question to you to judge. Before I lay emphasis on defining professionalism I would rather ponder on what is unprofessionalism. According to the Free Dictionary by Farlex unprofessionalism is defined as not conforming to the standards of a profession or unprofessional behavior. Some of the glaring example or traits of unprofessionalism is as follows- being unresponsive, putting the blame on others, not keeping up the promises, pervasive politics, being fake, putting profit ahead Most individuals probably look forward to work in an environment that is composed of professional and competitive staff. A positive working environment promotes efficiency, productivity, performance, teamwork and camaraderie. However, despite the effort of keeping the working environment positive and conducive, there are still employers who are insensitive of their conducts and behaviors in the workplace. Some of unethical code of conducts shown by employee are intimidation or bullying, sexual harassment, rude and loud comments, offensive and abusive language, persistent lateness in joining activities and attending meetings without valid and reasonable cause, vexatious litigation, retribution, and violent threats, passive aggression like refusal of performing assigned task, demands for special attention and treatment, uncooperative behavior during regular activities, unwillingness to talk about issues and concerns with colleagues in respectful and cordial manner, excessive criticisms and so on. This list can go on Professionalism can never be an innate quality. Each and every individual have this quality within them. You have to identify the quality, work towards it and then, utilize it to avail opportunity and achieve great heights. For instance, Howard Schultz, CEO and chair of Starbucks, leading coffee shop line in the world, was born and brought up in Brooklyn, New York in family of bourgeois mentality. After studying in Michigan University, he came up with a business idea of selling coffee drinks at coffee nooks instead of coffee beans, which was traditionally sold by Starbucks Company back then. This idea bloomed to such an extent that now we see Starbucks in every corner of the world. Schultz’s idea was accepted because he had the insight for professionalism in his work. He worked diligently and pervasively to achieve his goal. His aim was not to fill peoples’ bellies but peoples’ soul.
