Page 2 of 2 ZOOM At first glance, Waniek’s poem, “The Century Quilt” is about the love that the speaker and her sister shared for an Indian blanket that belonged to their Meema. However, she tells a story with a much deeper meaning and uses many different literary techniques to develop this underlying meaning. Waniek keenly structures her poem, her use of imagery and the tone conveyed to create pathos within her audience. This piece is centered on the idea of family and what a blessing it is to have an object that ties the people that you love, together.Notice how the poem is split into three stanzas. And in the third and final stanza, she talks about how it had been passed down through the generations before and the possibility of it allowing her to dream of her past and future. By splitting up her topics, she is able to create an acute and serene description of what this “Century Quilt” means to her. It isn’t just woven fabric, it’s her childhood, her dreams, her family. “Six Van Dyke brown squares, two white ones, and one square the yellowbrown of Mama’s cheeks.” This is a prime example of imagery used within the poem. And even better, it shows the direct correlation between the blanket and what it means to the speaker when it compares the color to the mother’s complexion, “yellowbrown of Mama’s cheeks.” Imagery is used to create a picture of love, unity and good memories. In lines 37-40, the author continues to make connotations between members in her family and the colors on the beloved blanket. Lastly, Waniek creates a distinct tone of joy and nostalgia. This is actually created from her use of imagery and diction. There are different variations of the word “dream” and she constantly talks about young girls
