Article Abstract
The Caribbean may be a great place to vacation, but is it safe? The Caribbean is known for its relaxed atmosphere and beautiful landscape, but countries in the region are poor and getting poorer and becoming increasingly unsafe. The region “depends for its livelihood on entertaining people who want carefree holidays to escape the harsh realities of life” (Canute, 2002). Because of “poverty, inequality, and social marginalization” (Canute, 2002) countries in the Caribbean are subject to massive crime that affects their economies. In addition, they are the unfortunate victims of their geographic location. Prime Minister of the Bahamas, Perry Christie, states, “We straddle the sea lanes and flight paths between producer countries in South America and the vast consumer markets to the north of us. We are caught in the middle” (Canute, 2002). Drug trafficking is particularly affecting the Dominican Republic, Jamaica, Puerto Rico, and Trinidad where large crime organizations set up operations.
The Caribbean countries are not taking this lightly. Fortunately they are bringing together intelligence and police forces as well as customs experts in order to combat the problem. However, the article goes on to mention that these are impoverished countries battling against wealthy crime organizations. Who has more power? Along those same lines, an additional cause for concern is the possibility that these same crime organizations may seek political positions or strong-arm Caribbean country governments so that they can effectively operation without much interference. Many members of these crime organizations have been educated in crime in the north and have been deported back to their homelands. This makes for far more sophisticated criminals than their local counterparts. Jamaican authorities say that a great deal of their criminal activity and high per capita murder rate is solely attributed to the problem of deportees.

Approximately 100 metric tons of cocaine passes through Jamaican shores every year (Jamaica: Army to assist police in fighting crime, drugs, 2002). With the U.S. focusing their efforts on protecting the home front, the Caribbean has become more fertile for an increase in crime. However, it appears that this region is relying heavily on itself to pave the way for positive change. During a three-day summit, a regional task force established by Caribbean governments will implement certain initiatives to decrease crime in the immediate future as well as long-term plans to alleviate poverty, inequality and social marginalization (Jamaica: Army to assist police in fighting crime, drugs, 2002).
“Jamaica’s a country of great dichotomy. On the one hand you have a tourist industry with great beaches and resorts, but on the other you have such great poverty and the violence that goes along with that.”(Michael Franti) In this paper, I will talk about the geography, the history of Jamaica, the people that live there now and that lived there in the past, the lifestyle of the society, and the society, like the government and economy.
Steven Gregory’s book entitled The Devil Behind The Mirror is an ethnographical study of the Dominican Republic. The Dominican Republic is in the Caribbean, it occupies the Western half of an island, while Haiti makes up the Eastern portion. Gregory attempts to study and analyze the political, social and cultural aspects of this nation by interviewing and observing both the tourists and locals of two towns Boca Chica and Andres. Gregory’s research centers on globalization and the transnational processes which affect the political and socio-economics of the Dominican Republic. He focuses on the social culture, gender roles, economy, individual and nation identity, also authority and power relations. Several of the major relevant issues facing Dominican society include racism, sexism, and discrimination, economy of resort tourism, sex tourism and the informal economy. The objective of Gregory’s ethnographic research is to decipher exclusionary practices incorporated by resort tourism, how it has affected locals by division of class, gender, and race, increasing poverty and reliance on an informal economy.
Throughout the eighteenth and nineteenth-centuries in England, there was a great time of triumph, both militarily and economically. Turning the page into the eighteenth century, England was beginning to gain larger land assets globally. This was happening primarily through an alliance between England, Portugal, and the Netherlands siding with the holy Roman empire against Spain and France in the War of Spanish Succession [6]. The conflict raged from 1701 to 1714 amongst the parties, over who had the right to succeed Charles the second as king of Spain [6]. Several battles are considered classics in military history, notably the Grand Alliance victories at Blenheim (1704) and Railleries (1706), which drove the French forces from Germany and the Netherlands, and the Franco-Bourbon Spanish victory at Almansa (1707), which in turn broke the Grand Alliance hold over Spain [4]. The war concluded with the Peace of Utrecht (1713), in which the warring states recognized the French candidate as King Philip V of Spain in exchange for territorial and economic concessions. The British Empire was territorially enlarged: from France, gaining Newfoundland and Acadia, and grabbing Gibraltar and Minorca from Spain [4],[5]. Gibraltar, which is still a British overseas territory to this day, became a critical naval base and allowed Britain to control the Atlantic entry and exit point to the Mediterranean [6]. By the 1720's England was in line to be one of the most powerful, if not the most powerful force in the world at that time [6]. As famed author Daniel Defoe said “we are the most diligent nation in the world. Vast trade, rich manufactures, mighty wealth, universal correspondence, and happy success have been constant companions of England, and gi...

Communist Manifesto written by Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels is their attempt to explain the goal of communism. They explained that class struggling or when one class exploits another is a result that is motivated by historical development. Their solution to all the exploitation and class struggle is communism. Where, the proletariats rise up against the bourgeoisies. Relationship in each class is defined by their source of production. Nevertheless, they end up not being compatible with the force of production they being placed with. Then, this end up with a revolution that will occur at this point and a new class appears and becomes the ruling class. Class conflicts in the society were characterized between the proletariat and bourgeoisie.
In the beginning of Communist Manifesto, Marx makes a statement “The history of all hitherto existing society is the history of class struggles.” And then he explains what he meant by his statement. During pre-revolutionary era, Marx claims that there is always the oppressor and the oppressed, freeman to the slave, and the ruler to the server. This system has been uninterrupted, hidden, and opened...
Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels wrote The Communist Manifesto in 1848. The manifesto explains their view of the world both intellectually and politically. Both Marx and Engels explain their view on communism and how they believed the world can be changed. The main arguments that Marx and Engels come across is their belief in the abolition of private property, the over throw of the bourgeoisie, and the establishment of a new society without any classes. The manifesto explains what they believe history is, what their goal for communism is and it exploits socialism and other parties opposing communism throughout Europe.
Karl Marx and Fredrick Engel are considered as the most influential figure in the history for the work in preparation of the Communist Manifesto during the revolution period in Europe. The manifesto was an analysis of the emergence of the concept of capitalism and industrial development. The aim of advocating for a communist society was to overthrow capitalism, which was prevalent in Europe, and overthrow it and adopt a communist society. They were right in advocating for a Communist society, a way of assisting and empowering worker to take over enterprises and the reins of the government, which was apparently under the hands of few people who were the owners of the factors of production. Their work was to describe a new society on the basis of their industrial revolution and describe inequality relationship that was prevalent among different social classes .
Marx and his coauthor, Friedrich Engels, begin The Communist Manifesto with the famous and provocative statement that the “history of all hitherto existing societies is the history of class struggle.” They argue that all changes in the shape of society, in political institutions, in history itself, are driven by a process of collective struggle on the part of groups of people with similar economic situations in order to realize their material or economic interests. These struggles, occurring throughout history from ancient Rome through the Middle Ages to the present day, have been struggles of economically subordinate classes against economically dominant classes who opposed their economic interests—slaves against masters, serfs against landlords,
Canada is viewed as being a very safe and stable place to live because people are lucky enough to have healthcare, benefits for unemployment and family needs, as well as maternity leave. Crime is something that Canadians don’t often think about because people feel as though they are out of harm's way. As Canadians, we’ve watched the world experience different threats and crime, and we’ve seen the world fight back. For example, our neighbors in North America, the United States, have gone through terrorist attacks and issues with guns and violence. Just because we are witnessing these things in other places doesn’t mean that we aren’t at risk as well, and Canada does have certain approaches and regards in place if we are ever in danger. What I wish to address in this paper is how Canada is set up for reacting to crime and jeopardy, as well as an example of where we went wrong in our past. Methods in response to crime, Canada’s legal regime and the issue of Residential schooling for Aboriginals a hundred years ago will be presented.
There are many problematic issues with the bourgeois need to over power the proletariats to create more capital. They made sure that the proletariat class had to work everyday in order to survive, thus creating the working class. Communism is the ideology of full equality between all classes of people, which is what the proletariats want. The manifesto is a call for a revolution, because it helps draw a bigger picture on the inequality of the classes and how it is
The article gives an overview of communism itself and its background throughout history. The article states that communism is a higher form of socialism and the ideas Karl Marx laid down to create a classless society through the use of communism. The article has excerpts about how Marx identified two phases of communism and how communism would eventually overthrow capitalism. The article reviews his two phases one of which describes how the working class would control society and the government; the other being Marx’s idea of, “From each according to his ability, to each according to his needs.”
Karl Marx was a German philosopher, economist, and sociologist, as well as a political revolutionary. In 1843 he began constructing the “Communist Manifesto” alongside his companion Friedrich Engels. The Manifesto began by arguing class struggles and elaborating on the exploitation of one class from another throughout history. “The history of all hitherto existing society is the history of class struggles.” (__) Marx explains that throughout history we see the oppressor and the oppressed in constant opposition to one another—sometimes openly and others concealed. Each time the fight ends between the two either a revolutionary reconstruction is implicated or in the classes demise. The Manifesto continues to show that the modern bourgeoisie is the product of several of th...
With the world changing and advancing with technology, criminal organizations are taking advantage of new opportunities. The advancement of travel, ease of communication, and an increase in demand, has all contributed to the globalization of crime. Every nation has been affected by the globalization of crime and the problem continues to grow.
