The breakdown of The Prince is really all about politics. An analysis of The Prince reveals the power and knowledge Niccolo Machiavelli had. Accepting this knowledge, the audience (the reader) can understand the type of influence Machiavelli had in politics. The textbook mentions that “Machiavelli transformed our conception of political power” (p.180). The way Machiavelli thought about politics struck a different political mindset into those who read it. Niccolò Machiavelli was born in 1469 and died in 1527. In that time he became a florentine statesman, writer, and political philosopher. Machiavelli focuses on how corrupt the government is and his ways to fix it. He came up with a theory, which is in The Prince, to help overcome the wrongdoings of awful governments. Machiavellianism is referred to Machiavelli’s theory. This term and the adjective ‘Machiavellian’ are associated with treachery, disloyalty, cunning, unscrupulousness and/or hypocrisy (Roland). The whole point of The Prince was to get Machiavelli into office but in the process the book became admired by many. Princely virtues or princely qualities are on Machiavelli “bad” list. If one is a prince then that individual rules or is close to ruling over a kingdom. Most of these princes were controlling, demanding of praise and cruel. Machiavelli princely qualities “...are marked with with some of the qualities that bring them either blame or praise. To wit, one man is through liberal, another stingy...one is thought to be open-handed, another grasping; one cruel, the other compassionate; one is a breaker of faith, the other reliable; one is effeminate and cowardly, the other vigorous and spirited...the other unbelieving; and so on (p.186). These are just some of the virtues of a prince. Some are good, some are evil and there are many in between but to be worthy of praise the prince would be required to have all of the above qualities. To have all of qualities would be almost impossible because human nature would not allow it to happen. To strive to be perfect is a good goal as prince but the stress and difficulty for that to happen would ultimately ruin that prince and his
