There have been many discussions over the course of this principles of literature class that talk about theme, structure, and the plot of the story. Fiction has been one of the main genres that have been analyzed in this course too. Likewise, in Edgar Allan Poe’s, “The Black Cat”, the plot, structure, and the different themes can provide for a unique discussion in class, which is why it should be included in this course. To begin with is some background information about the author, Edgar Allan Poe. Edgar Allan Poe had a difficult upbringing, as a child he was orphaned when both of his parents died and he lived with another family which was headed by John Allan. Poe attended the University of Virginia and joined the army after college, but soon left the army from his disliking of it. He became a poet and soon became famous, “Poe’s reputation today rests primarily on his tales of terror as well as on his haunting lyric poetry ("Poe's Life").” Poe’s “The Black Cat” is nothing short of being a horror story (Templar). Furthermore, is a summarization of the main points in “The Black Cat.” “The Black Cat” is about a man who always loved animals since he was little, but as he aged he started drinking. He then tortured his favorite pet cat, Pluto after he was getting annoyed with his presence. He goes as far as gouging out its eye before he hangs it in an old tree. Later on, his house burnt down and the outline of the cat was left on the only standing wall left by the fire. After he and his wife get a new home, they soon found a new cat that looked just like the old one except it had white around its neck. The plot of “The Black Cat” is unique to most of the stories that were read over this course but the themes are quite similar to most that were read in this class.
