Archduke Franz Ferdinand was the heir to the austro Hungarian throne. He was assassinated on June 28 1914 by Gavrilo Princip. The Serbian secret society the black hand later took ownership for the attack. Austria-Hungary gave Serbia an ultimatum that they were sure they would refuse, giving them a reason to declare war. These alliances brought all the world’s major nations at war against each other. Nationalism and the pride that people had for their countries brought them to believe that their nation was the best and that they would defeat the others.
