The Age of European Exploration
The age of exploration was filled with courageous voyagers and
conquistadores from all over Europe, much like today, there was much
competition for land rights. The main disputes were between Spain and
Portugal. And these are the representatives from not only these two
countries, but surrounding ones as well.
Christopher Columbus was a sea captain from Genoa. He first tried
to convince Portugal, then Spain to sponsor a voyage to Asia across the
Atlantic. Columbus thought that the voyage would take two months, others
said four months, but he left with enough food and supplies for only two
months. He landed in the West Indes (Bahamas, Haiti, Cuba) when the two
months of supplies ran out. Their voyage began on August 3, 1492, from
Palos, Spain and ended on October 12 when land was sighted at the Americas.

In 1492, Christopher Columbus sailed the ocean blue, which started a huge push by European nations to gain power and wealth, mainly in the way of building Empires in the New World. This was called the Age of Exploration and lasted from the late 15th to the early 17th century. Spain, under King Ferdinand II of Aragon, was the first nation to do this. Juan Ponce de León was a conquistador and one of the earlier voyagers to the New World in the European Age of Exploration, he accomplished several notable things in his life, but overall and looking in hindsight he is seen as a failure when compared to other conquistadors.

Before the Age of Exploration, a period lasting for centuries with long-extending effects, Europeans had not truly begun to explore Asia, Africa, and the Americas. Even with the fearless adventures of the Vikings, Polynesians, and Ming Chinese, no extreme, lasting difference was created. Once people began exploring outside of their own worlds, great social, political, and economic change was ushered in with the exchange and alteration of people, plants, animals, technology, diseases, religion, and political systems.

Throughout history, there have been turning points that have changed the course of society. The three most important turning points were the Age of Exploration, the Renaissance, and the Reformation. Each had many positive and negative effects on history. During the Age of Exploration, many explorers set out in their massive sailing ships to find another way to get to India, but what they discovered was a major turning point in the history of the world. During the Renaissance, many people in Europe began having new ideas and concepts about life and even started believing in humanism, which was emphasizing the value of humans in many forms (during this time it was art). And finally during the Reformation, it was a time of religious conflict was shaped Europe into what it was today.

Upon encountering the New World, Columbus immediately claimed the land along with its natives for his Spanish sovereigns.
